Ray Canfield, age 95, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at 5:45 a.m. at the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center (ERCC). Ray was born on May 13, 1930, to Calvin Canfield and Icie Lena Cross Canfield at Canfield Hollow in Montrose, West Virginia. He spent most of his life in Montrose, later lived in Beverly, West Virginia, and most recently resided at the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center of Randolph County. His health had been in decline for the last few years.
Ray was married to the love of his life, Valley Marie Arbogast Canfield, for 56 years. They were married on June 12, 1965, in Oakland, Maryland. Valley preceded him in death on January 26, 2022. Ray is survived by four children: Helen Marie Canfield of Elkins; Ray Lee Canfield and Donna of Beverly; Steven Clay Canfield of Elkins; and Jeffrey Wayne Canfield and Samantha of Beverly, West Virginia. He was a proud grandfather and great-great-grandfather. Grandchildren surviving include Ashley, Nick, Alyssa, and Daisy. Great-grandchildren surviving include Emilee, Parker, Natalee, and Ava and a great-great-grandchild Truett. He is also survived by two siblings, Pauline Canfield Arbogast of Montrose and Ward Canfield of Tucker County. He was preceded in death by Anna Grace Null, Willie Canfield, Mary Eva Newlon, Thurman Canfield, Hazel Bedford, Truman Canfield, Troy Canfield, Bessie Wilfong, Geraldine Canfield, and Sance Canfield. Ray worked for many years at Canfield Lumber Co., skidded logs with a horse, later worked at Mullenax Lumber Company, and retired from Colonial Millworks in his 70s. Ray was a Methodist by faith. Ray was a hard worker and a simple man. He was a great provider for his family. He was well liked and loved by those who knew him. Ray's family finds comfort in knowing he has now been reunited with his beloved wife, Valley. Friends may call from 12:00 noon until 2:00 pm Saturday, January 3, 2026 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Kevin Gainer officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman. The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Ray Canfield.
