Ray Moore Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pyle Funeral Home - Johnston City on Jan. 5, 2026.
Raburn Spencer "Ray" Moore, 75, of Johnston City, passed away at 3:23 a.m., January 3, 2026, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Ray was born on May 3, 1950, in Dekoven, Kentucky to Robert and Lilly (Wallace) Moore. He was united in marriage to Gail Ann Dooley on February 16, 1973, in Evansville, Indiana. Together they shared almost 53 years of marriage together.
Ray served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he demonstrated courage and sacrifice, earning both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Following his military service, Ray worked at several boat factories, until his retirement.
Ray had a deep love for the outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. A skilled angler, Ray proudly won the Mr. Bass in 1990. Above all else, Ray's greatest joy in life was being a grandfather. He cherished his granddaughter, Mady Rae, and would have done anything in the world for her.
Ray is survived by his wife, Gail Moore of Johnston City; two children, Jason (Rebecca) Moore of Johnston City and Jamie (Joey Dixon) Moore of Herrin; one granddaughter, Madyson Moore serving in the U.S. Navy of Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska and Carley Payne of Johnston City, whom he loved as a granddaughter as well; step-grandchildren, Madison and Makena Malone; several siblings, Joanna Outland of Dover, TN, Anna Sharp of Morganfield, KY, Robertta "Sissy" Cheatham of Dover, TN, Gene (Nadene) Moore of Clarksville, TN, Tonya (John) Gallagher of Wheatfield, IN, James Moore of McMinnville, TN, Glen (Ava) Moore of Wheatfield, IN, Charlotte (Blaine) Bradury of Knox, KY and Mike Wallace of Indianapolis, IN; two sisters-in-law, Brenda "BK" Etheridge of Sebring, FL and Sandy Baza of Denair, CA. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and special hunting and fishing buddies.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Rocky Dooley.
A celebration of life service will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 9, 2025, at Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City with Pastor Andy Lee officiating. Inurnment will follow at Cana Cemetery in Goreville with military rites accorded by the VFW Post #1301 and members of the National Guard Detail Team.
