Harry “Ray” Underwood, age 86, passed away on August 29, 2025. Born October 22, 1938, in Columbus, Mississippi, to Grace Truman McCullough and Stillman “Lawrence” Underwood, Sr., Ray lived a full life built on love, laughter, and loyalty.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Hilda Gaye Springer Underwood, as well as his brothers Bobby, Richard, and S.L. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends who cherished him dearly.
Ray devoted much of his career to Fluor Daniel as Manager of Craft Recruiting, earning numerous awards for his leadership and hard work. A proud patriot, he also served in the United States Army National Guard for six years in his younger days.
Faith was a cornerstone of Ray’s life. He spent countless hours reading and studying the Bible he loved so much. As a devoted member of River Bend Baptist Church, he took great pride in being one of the first to arrive on Sunday mornings—often reminding others that he had already beaten them there.
Ray had the gift of storytelling. His family and friends quickly learned that when he started talking, it was time to sit back and enjoy the ride. Among his favorite tales were memories of befriending country music legend Charlie Rich in his younger years, and the unforgettable night he and Hilda met Willie Nelson before a major NASCAR race. Both stories reflected Ray’s larger-than-life personality.
In retirement, Ray enjoyed reading novels, especially John Grisham, often finishing a book in just two days. He also carried deep pride for Ole Miss, always ready to talk Rebel football with anyone, anywhere. His passion for NASCAR took him, Hilda, and his brothers across the South, from Talladega to Daytona, making memories both on and off the track.
Ray’s spirit, laughter, and love of life will be dearly missed. If he could leave us with one final cheer, it would be loud and proud: “Hotty Toddy!”
Funeral services will be at noon on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at River Bend Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Oak Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the service hour at the church.
