Rayford Squires Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home & Cemetery on Feb. 23, 2026.
SQUIRES---CPO Rayford C. Squires (USN Ret), 86, of Orange Park, FL passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on February 20, 2026. He was born October 22, 1939, in Kelly, NC; one of five children to Troy and Nina Squires.

As a teen, he left his small town in NC and joined the US Navy. He met the love of his life, Aiko Squires, while serving in Hawaii. Together they raised 3 children; Ray Jr, Sandra, and Lester.

Ray loved his country, and he served as a Commissary services Chief Petty Officer until he retired in 1977. After the Navy, he worked as a dietary manager in several retirement and nursing homes.

Most of all, Ray loved and protected his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 65 years, Aiko Squires; his children, Rayford C. Squires Jr, Sandra (Fred) Szoke, and Lester Squires. Ray adored his grandchildren, Timothy Szoke, Ryan (Jamie) Szoke, and Logan (Viktoria) Szoke with all his heart; they were known as "Pop's Buddies", and they could do no wrong in his eyes. He was also blessed with 4 great-grandchildren, Aaron, Lukas, Zofia, and Nolan Szoke.

Ray was well known for his cooking. He always said if you go away hungry, it's your own fault! He was generous and made sure everyone was fed well. We feasted every Sunday for family dinners for years! He was a great cook, and we treasure those family meals around his table, laughing, talking, and stuffing our faces.

Ray also loved to garden. He took pride in growing many different fruits and vegetables that he shared with everyone. He grew up on a farm, and he put those skills to good use.

My Dad was also so strong; I mean country strong! He could lift the heaviest things all by himself. He didn't let illnesses stop him; he just kept going. Even at the end of his life, the nurses were shocked by his strength. He was the rock of our family. He was stern, but fair. He was always willing to help, even with the hard work.

Funeral services in celebration of his life will be held at 2:30 PM on Monday March 2, 2026 at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32218 with Pastor David Tarkington of First Baptist Church Orange Park officiating. Mr. Squires will be laid to rest with Full Military Honors. Those wishing to attend should arrive by 2:15 PM in Lane 2 at the cemetery.

We find great comfort in knowing that Dad is with Jesus, and his body and mind are at rest. His legacy lives on through the lessons he taught us, the love he shared, and the memories we will cherish forever. We miss you Pops; may you rest easy with Jesus.
