Raymond Eugene Armelin, was born on November 23, 1945, to Phyllis and James Armelin, Sr. in
Baldwin, LA. He attended Baldwin Negro and G.W. Hamilton Elementary Schools. His high school years were spent at Park Avenue High School in Franklin, LA, "the home of the Rattler." He served in the U.S. Army before working 34 years at Columbian Chemical.
As a child, he received the staple sacraments of Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation. Through this beginning, he tried to live as a flawed, but proud servant of God. Meeting Barbara Derouen of Delcambre, LA, was truly amazing! She and her family of brothers and sisters made our family complete. Barbara is a blessing for whom we are very grateful.
Raymond loved all sports especially football and basketball. In the fall and winter, if you needed him for anything, first check the schedule. He loved the Saints, Pelicans, Grambling, Southern, and UL. In fact, the Grambling/Southern games were celebrated at his house, on the phone with Sharon (NO) and Shannon (IN).
Known as the "Quiet one," he was far from that. After 4 o'clock Mass, he enjoyed causing "mess" between Cathy and Ricky Picard. He enjoyed teasing his sisters about how much more Daddy loved his boys than and his girls (not true). According to Raymond, Daddy loved his boys and tolerated his girls. He was a true chauvinist, but he loved hearing about women doing things once thought to be "men's work." When Stephanie, Adrienne, and Janet completed the requirements for their doctorates, he was "over the moon." Seeing Cathy fix and build things, putting in systems was a pleasure. He would stand there with "Jerry Armelin-look" on his face, pretending to doubt; and then be as proud as a peacock when she proved him wrong.
"Tuff" loved his church, family, and many friends. He leaves to mourn and rejoice his passing his beloved wife, Barbara; four brothers, James Jr. (Audrey), Murphy (Earline), C.J.(Carrie), and Clyde all of
Baldwin, LA; five sisters, Myrtha (Joe), Verna, Sylvia all of
Baldwin, LA, Shannon (George), Sharon (Eugene) of New Iberia, LA; bonus sister, Ruth Teno of New Iberia, LA; a nephew who shadowed his every move, Colin Francis; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, who share our loss.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; older sister, Barbara A. Drexler; and all of whom knew that "Earth has no sorrow that Heaven can not heal."
