Raymond L. Dempsey, Jr., a beloved father, grandfather, and brother, peacefully departed this world on September 22, 2025, at his home in Cranston, Rhode Island, surrounded by the warmth of his cherished family. Born on June 18, 1949, in Providence, Raymond's life was a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of creativity, compassion, and dedication to both his profession and his loved ones.
A prolific writer for local and national publications from 1980 to 1988, Raymond's spirit of inquiry and communication thrived through various mediums. As producer and moderator of the show Chapter & Verse on Station RICA in Providence since 1988, he cultivated a platform for insightful dialogue. His devotion to broadcasting extended to radio programs like Church Focus and People on Station WRIB, sharing his voice and vision with a wider audience since 1989. He was a member of the Board of Directors for Blessing, Inc., where he shared his benevolent spirit with the community.
Raymond's pursuit of excellence was recognized throughout his career; he held notable accolades such as being named one of the Top 4 Local Cable Television Producers in the Nation by the National Association of Local Cable Programming in 1987, along with several prestigious awards in the field of broadcasting. His insightful contributions as a special correspondent for the Songtime United States of America Radio Network and other roles left an indelible mark on the industry.
With a passion for learning, Raymond earned a Bachelor in Liberal Arts from Rhode Island College in 1973, and pursued various certifications in business and computer programming later on. Among his proudest moments was becoming an official Jerusalem Pilgrim in 1990 and being honored as a Partner in Philanthropy in 1995. Raymond also contributed significantly to public affairs, receiving multiple awards for his excellence and commitment to his craft.
Outside of his professional achievements, Raymond was a devoted father to his sons, Joab Dempsey (Kristina), Jahdeam Dempsey (Nicole), and Ryan Dempsey (Sandra), Nathanel Dempsey and a loving father to his daughter, Talitha Newsome (Richard). He found immense joy in the company of his grandchildren: Penelope, Stella, Zoey, Cadence, Gwendolyn, and Ella, who were the bright lights of his life. Raymond’s generosity and love extended to his sister, Regina "Jeanine" Dempsey (Donald Woeltjen) who was a treasured part of his life.
Raymond L. Dempsey, Jr.'s passions included scuba diving, marksmanship, and biblical archaeology, embodying a zest for exploration and discovery that resonated deeply with those around him. His commitment to helping others was reflected in his early career as a nursing assistant and patient attendant, showcasing his compassionate nature and dedication to care.
He is preceded in death by his loving parents, Louise V. Gambuto and Raymond L. Dempsey, Sr., who undoubtedly looked upon him with pride from above. As we remember Raymond L. Dempsey, Jr., we honor a man whose life was a beautiful narrative filled with love, artistic expression, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community. His legacy will continue to inspire and illuminate the path of those who were blessed to know him.
