June 19, 1948 – December 3, 2025

Raymond George Gorom Jr., beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away on December 3, 2025, in St. George, Utah. Born on June 19, 1948, in Los Angeles, California, to Raymond Sr. and Elizabeth Pickel Gorom, Ray lived a life marked by dedication, service, and quiet strength.

Although born in Los Angeles, Ray moved to Whittier, California, in 1953, where he spent most of his childhood and teenage years. He graduated from Pioneer High School in 1966 and later continued his education at Rio Hondo College.

Ray proudly served in the United States Navy as part of Squadron 66, a helicopter anti-submarine unit. His service later took him to the Naval Reserve Manpower Center in Bainbridge, Maryland. He earned the National Defense Service Medal in recognition of his commitment and dedication.

While serving in the Navy, Ray played an important role in the recovery of NASA's Apollo 11, 12, and 13 capsules-historic missions to which he contributed with steady skill and professionalism. He served aboard the USS Hornet and the USS Iwo Jima, and during this time he had the honor of meeting President Richard Nixon, who personally praised Ray for his work with both the Navy and NASA. The structure and discipline he gained from these experiences shaped him throughout his life.

Ray will be remembered as a dedicated, hardworking man-someone who gave his full effort to every task, whether in service to his country, his career, or his home. He approached responsibilities with seriousness and integrity, often working behind the scenes without seeking recognition. His reliability, strong work ethic, and unwavering sense of duty left an imprint on everyone who knew him.

Above all, Ray was a devoted husband and father. Those who loved him will remember his quiet strength, his humility, and the pride he took in his family. He not only cherished his own children, but also helped raise David, Jennifer, and Mark, loving and supporting them as deeply as if they were his own. He approached every challenge with calm determination and every relationship with loyalty and heart.

Ray is survived by his wife, Carol Landis; his children, Elishia, Raymond, and Michelle; his grandchildren, Ashley Wilson, Mathew Wilson, and Raquel Gorom; his sister, Sandra Bonine; his nephew, Raymond Arguijo; his best friend Jesse Carmona; and many other beloved family members. He is preceded in death by his brother Ted Brinson.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, California, at a later date. Family and friends are also encouraged to share photos and memories in celebration of Ray's life on his digital memorial page below.
