Raymond Hester Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lunning Funeral Chapel on Jan. 28, 2026.
Raymond William Hester, 92, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born on April 1, 1933, in Burlington, he was the son of Willie and Alice (Cable) Hester. He was one of nine children. Ray grew up on a small family farm during the final years of the Great Depression, where life was simple, and hard work was a way of life.

On September 27, 1952, in Burlington, Ray married Shirley M. Miller. Together they celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary before Shirleys passing on March 5, 2023.

Ray served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he and Shirley began building their life together, starting with their family and their first home, the basement of which they dug out by hand.

Ray was a dedicated husband, father, and provider. With determination and perseverance, he founded Ray Hester Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, growing the business from the ground up into a successful and respected enterprise. He served his community faithfully through his work, forming lifelong friendships along the way.

After retirement Ray and Shirley enjoyed going out on their pontoon boat on the Mississippi River, and camping at Spring Lake. In the winter months they enjoyed packing up the RV and heading to Yuma, Arizona.

Along with being known for his strong work ethic and love for his family, Ray leaves behind a legacy of faith, integrity, and dedication. He and Shirley were both known for their dedication to their faith, family and church, serving together and being lifelong members for 65 years at Harmony Bible Church. The family takes great comfort in knowing that their father is reunited with their mom Shirley and their Lord and Savior. They look forward to the day they will all be together again in their heavenly home.

"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'" John 14:6

He is survived by his six children: Debra (Joel) Schwenker of Burlington, Danny (Susan) Hester of Cedar Rapids, Denise Kempker of West Point, Dennis (Danita) Hester of Montrose, Derek (Kim) Hester of Florida, and Devin Hester of Danville; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; three siblings: Joyce Pender, Marilynn Mullins, and David Hester. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Shirley, five brothers: Jimmy, Larry, Bill, Wayne and Richard Hester and a grandson Joshua Minton.

Per his wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel.

A private graveside service will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
