Raymond Ernie Torres was born to Cornelio Torres and Frances Leyba in Fort Lupton, Colorado on February 10, 1937. He was well known growing up in a small town and had many fond memories of his childhood friends. He dropped out of high school, but later went on to get his GED.
Ray joined the Marines in March 1954, just 5 weeks after his 17th birthday. He served for 3 years, spending 15 months overseas, including time in Japan. He earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Ray had 5 children, 2 sons Michael and David from his first marriage and 3 from his wife and soulmate, Virginia Atencio. June 30th would have been their 62nd anniversary. He had two daughters, Diana Cordova, and Julie Nuss. His youngest son, Ray Jr went home to be with the Lord on Father's Day 1988, less than two weeks after his 17th birthday.
Ray grew up picking beans and working hard to make a dollar. He worked at the Denver Mint for a brief time and then found his place as a Surveyor Supervisor for Brannan Sand & Gravel. He worked for them for 33 years and retired at 55. He was always a great provider!
In retirement, Ray and Gina loved to travel and visited many places including Hawaii, Niagara Falls, Seattle, South Dakota, San Antonia, California, Wisconsin, Mexico, and Germany. Ray became a grandpa at 32 and a GG Grandpa at 87.
Ray had diabetes since 1996 and dementia set in about ten years ago. The final years were difficult, riddled with pain, but he had a peaceful passing on May 19, 2024. He is now residing in heaven with the Father God, Jesus, and Ray Jr.
Ray is survived by his wife Virginia Torres, daughters Diana Cordova (Terry), Julie Nuss (Greg), his older brother Frank Torres (Karen) and younger sister Anita Crespin (Pascuel), his sons Michael and David Torres along with many grand children.
Celebration of Life will be held at The Crossing Church of the Nazarene, 3501 W. 104th Ave., Westminster, CO Tuesday, May 28th @ 11 AM. Reception will follow at the same location from 12-2 PM
In Lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to your local animal shelter.
