Irene "Rene" Elsie Burns, 92, of Springfield, MO passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2024, peacefully at her home. Rene was born August 25, 1931, in Bellaire, OH the youngest of five children. Preceding her in death are her first husband, Regis Walsh; and two sons, Ricky and Terry Walsh. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Bill; a daughter, Teresa Burr and husband Mike; a son, Bob Burns; eleven grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Rene was employed by The Department of Defense working at U.S. Navy installations in San Diego, California and Yokosuka, Japan, as a personnel Specialist. She retired in September of 1989. Shortly after retiring she moved from San Diego, California to Springfield, Missouri. During her retirement she enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, doing volunteer work at her church, Campbell United Methodist, Dickerson Park Zoo, and nursing homes. She enjoyed playing dominoes, cards and board games. She very competitive and especially enjoyed beating her husband, Bill. Rene will be sorely missed for her pleasant demeanor, sweet smile, quick wit and storytelling.
Phoenix Hospice provided Rene with excellent care during her time of need, whether it be 2 am or 2 pm. Maria, Rene's nurse was exceptionally nice treating her lovingly and with dignity.
Services will be held at 3 PM, Monday, June 10, 2024, in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Midwest Cremation and Funeral Services of Springfield, MO.
