Rene Martinez, 68, of Miami Beach, Florida and Mashpee, MA, and formerly of Holliston, MA, passed away unexpectedly on July 19, 2022. He was born in Havana, Cuba and emigrated to the United States at the age of six. His family moved from Miami to Bristol, RI in 1965. Rene became an outstanding student-athlete and proud member of the Bristol High School Class of 1973; he was later enshrined in the Bristol Athletic Hall of Fame. Rene continued to play baseball at Colby College where he earned a degree in Economics and was also a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
Rene worked for IBM and Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) prior to becoming an entrepreneur and co-founding two companies. Outside of work he loved sailing and cruising New England with his family aboard his Shannon 43, GLORY, and was a longtime member of the Barrington Yacht Club. Upon retiring and moving to Cape Cod, his passion switched to golf as a member of Willowbend Country Club. Rene loved international travel, a German lager, a nice glass of Albariño wine, and never passed up a good pastry or dessert.
Rene is survived by his wife of 39 years, Barbara (Snyder) Martinez, whom he met at IBM in 1982; his son Peter and his wife, Diana, of Augusta, GA; his daughter Julie French and her husband, Graham of Highlands Ranch, CO; and three cherished grandchildren, Michael and Victoria Martinez and Skye French. He is also survived by his sister, Angela Lugo and brothers Ricardo Martinez, Serafin Martinez and Percy Martinez, all of Florida. He was predeceased by his parents, Anastasia Martinez Abreu and Serafin Martinez, and brother, Roberto Martinez.
A visitation will be held at Chapman Funeral Home, 74 Algonquin Avenue, Mashpee on Monday, July 25 from 4-7 PM and a Mass of Christian Burial at Christ the King Parish, Mashpee will be held (and live streamed) at 10:30 on Tuesday, July 26. Burial will follow in Great Neck Woods Cemetery in Mashpee.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Snyder Family Memorial Scholarship of Citizens' Scholarship Fund of Barrington, PO Box 300, Barrington, RI 02806.
