Of Williamsville, NY. Born in 1933 in Santa Clara, Cuba, Dr. Rene Perez-Bode was known and loved by all for his integrity and generous spirit. Despite the difficulties he faced in life, his intelligent sense of humor and natural warmth brought levity and wisdom to every situation. A 1955 graduate of the University of Havana Dental School, he went on to join his father's practice of 60 years in Santa Clara. Upon his arrival to the U.S. as a Cuban refugee in 1967, he chose UB because of its Foreign Graduate Dental Student Program. With the help and support of Catholic Charities, he and his family began a new life in Western New York. Just prior to his graduation from UB in 1970, he was offered the position of Clinical Professor of Operative Dentistry- and Buffalo became his permanent home. The Buffalo community welcomed his extended family of 8 with open arms. In life, his priorities were clear, faith, family, and friends all with a tireless work ethic. In addition to his faculty position and his private practice in Williamsville, he served migrant workers in the southern tier and residents on the west side of Buffalo through various clinics. His warm professionalism garnered the respect of colleagues, students and patients. On several occasions he was recognized by his students with the Dental Educator Award "…in recognition of his outstanding devotion and leadership in dental education." Upon his retirement at age 85, the Mattina Neighborhood Health Center named the dental clinic in his honor. Dr. Perez-Bode enjoyed entertaining around his famous Paellas Valencianas and who could forget a wonderful spin with him on the dance floor ?! A gifted storyteller, he brought to life his experiences growing up in Cuba and the travails of making his way to the United States to offer his family the promise of liberty and justice for all. Beloved husband of Clotilde (neè Velasco) Perez-Bode; on December 14 of this year they celebrated 67 years of marriage. He will always be the cherished father of Clotilde (Adrian III) Dedecker, Rene (Mercedes) Perez-Bode Jr., Prisco(Mercedes) Perez-Bode, Raimundo Perez-Bode and Maximilian Perez-Bode. He was a devoted grandfather and a proud great-grandfather. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
