Renee Iber Obituary

Published by Star Tribune from Aug. 29 to Aug. 30, 2009.
Iber, Renee Ann Ratanas We celebrate the life and mourn the untimely loss of our beloved Renee. Her determined struggle with cancer brought us precious time with her over the past eight months. We thank her for this heroic effort to stay with us. Renee had a balance of loveliness and a tough determination to champion important core values. She was deeply committed to her role as loving mom for her children Alex and Stephanie Ratanas and her stepchildren Katy and Carlos Iber and to enabling their happiness and growth. Renee has provided an enduring beacon of love and direction for her children. She has helped to provide a better future to many young women in our community. Her joy of life and caring companionship will be deeply missed by her husband Con Iber. Renee was 51 years old and was raised in rural Brooklyn Park by her parents Gerry and Ed Forystek and centered in age amongst her 10 siblings Ruth, Bruce, Wesley, Niles, Michelle, Vincent, Tony, Roger, Martine, and Nathan. She attended Park Center High School where she was as an accomplished gymnast. Renee graduated in Fine Arts from Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1980. For four years she was a clothing designer for women and children in Minneapolis and New York before starting her family in Minneapolis. In 2003, she started a second career following completion of masters of social work from the University of St. Thomas and subsequently practiced as a licensed social worker serving children in Hennepin County and surrounding areas in Children's Mental Health and at Washburn Center for Children. Renee worked on the front line facilitating grief support groups and enabling quality of life for patients with serious mental illness. Her extreme and enduring dedication to adolescent girls in difficult situations created new starts with hopeful futures - we will continue to feel her loving hand in our community. Visitation wakes will be held at Wasburn-McReavy Edina Chapel from 5-8 pm Monday, August 31st at 5000 West 50th and Highway 100 and Annunciation Church 10-11 am Tuesday, September 1st at 509 W. 54th St., Minneapolis. The funeral will be at 11 am Tuesday at Annunciation following visitation. The family wishes to thank the Hennepin County Medical Center Cancer Center and Little Hospice for her lovely and skilled care spanning her difficult illness. Those who wish to continue Renee's commitment to providing hope and guidance to children should direct donations to Washburn Center for Children, 2430 Nicollet Avenue South Minneapolis, MN 55404.

Dear Alex, Stephanie ad Con. Our son Erik from AHA did not know. I just sent him a message as we just found out today. We are all so sorry. Alex, I remember sitting at the same table for one of the early Mother -Son dinner dances for AHA with you and your mother. She was a delightful, sweet, interesting person and I enjoyed seeing her over your high school years at AHA. To all of you we send our prayers and hopes you will find great comfort among family, friends and in your faith. Alex and Stephanie, my mother died too young of cancer also. May your mother Renee's loving care of you both, all that she taught you and all the joy she brought you shine in you always. Keep the stories about her front and center in your lives so her memory is always there to guide you. Con, again, we are so sorry. We will send a proper card to all of you. God bless you from John, Elizabeth, Amanda and Erik Skinner.

Stephanie and Alex,
Rick and I are shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of your exceptional mom. Although we moved away from Logan Av. sixteen years ago, I have many wonderful memories of the time we spent together as new moms. She taught me how to make a sewing pattern, how to use a serger and introduced me to the fabric outlet. I will never forget her or our time spent on the porch just chatting. She was a special woman.
With deepest sympathy,
Barb Clark

I had the privilege of working with Renee in one of her first jobs as a social worker. We a both shared the experience of living is S.W. Mpls and having children attend Annunciation. I recall she was not going to be held back from attending any of the three Christmas performances at school and cleared her schedule to do so. It was clear to me the love she had for her children. I am sorry for your loss.

Dearest Alex and Steph,
Your mom was a very strong, determined, and independent woman. She always had goals and saw them through regardless of the challenges that faced her. I know these are just some of the traits she instilled in both of you. I hope you will always respect and lean on each other in happy times and in troubled times. Though you are surrounded by a large and extended family, I hope you will always know how very much I love you both and am here as your sister and your friend when ever you should need.

With deepest sympathy,
Your sis...Jenn
