Retired Colonel Return Jonathan "Jon" Meigs of Overland Park, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2023. He was born in Connecticut and moved to Johnson County at age nine when his parents, of R. Jonathan and Helen D. Meigs were transferred to Kansas City. He attended Shawnee-Mission High School and graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Industrial Management and where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. Upon graduation he won his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Army and served in Korea. Over the course of his career he worked in IT with Hallmark, IBM and retired from Cartwright Van Lines. In 1964, he married the love of his live, Barbara Ann Greene.
Jon loved the military life. He was a Master Parachutist, an Army Green Beret and a member of Special Forces. He was a Graduate of the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth. His pastimes were many; on the quiet side he liked gardening and working with watercolor. On the other side he was an avid cyclist and golfer up until his final days. He cherished extended family road trips across the country with both beautiful scenery and areas for hiking. Many trips were to areas of National Parks; a special place was the Sedona area.
Jon is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara Meigs; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Hockenberg (Edward); a son, Return Jonathan Meigs, (Kim); sister, Marietta Meigs Schreiber; two granddaughters, Jacqueline Meigs Hockenberg and Avery Rush Meigs and his grandson Return Jonathan (Jack) Meigs. He was a quiet individual, love to read and relax with a beer, kept opinions to himself, but was extremely thorough in what he did or accomplished.
A Private Graveside service with full Military Honors will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kansas.
