Reuben Schroeder Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Denning Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services on Mar. 8, 2026.
Reuben was born October 21, 1940, on the dairy farm of his parents, the late George F. and Martha Schroeder. He grew up in Mt. Vernon, Indiana and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School before attending Purdue University. He married his loving wife, Mary, on August 14, 1966, and they enjoyed fifty-nine years together. Reuben proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserves and was a member of Zion-Lippe United Church of Christ in Mt. Vernon, IN.

Reuben began his career with Whirlpool Corporation and later worked with Agrico Chemical Company. His career brought him to Albany, Georgia in 1979. In 1980, he purchased the well-known Taylor's Market, where he and his family welcomed a host of loyal patrons looking to find the best steaks in the area. Reuben owned and operated Taylor's Market for twenty-three years before his retirement.

After retiring, Reuben honed his talents as a renowned woodworker, crafting detailed pieces for his loved ones. He was also an avid deer hunter and enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden. Reuben loved sports of all kinds, but he took special joy in attending the sporting events of his children and grandchildren over the years. He was a dedicated Purdue fan, never lost faith the Boilermakers would win the NCAA men's basketball tournament, and was most often seen proudly wearing his Purdue hat.

Reuben is survived by his wife, Mary L. Schroeder of Albany, GA, and his three children, Angie Potter (Jason) of Albany, GA, Nathan Schroeder (Mitzi) of Atlanta, GA and Mark Schroeder (Eve) of Albany, GA. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Mary McCain Roy (Davis) and Will Potter of Birmingham, AL, Madelyn Schroeder (Andrew) and Isabel Schroeder of Atlanta, GA, and Hannah Schroeder of Albany, GA, as well as his first great-granddaughter Emma Roy. Reuben is additionally survived by his siblings, Ruth Rueger of Mt. Vernon, IN, Mildred Morrison of Evansville, IN, Ervin Schroeder (Elena) of Hot Springs, AR, and Norman Schroeder of Mt. Vernon, IN. Reuben is preceded in death by his siblings Raymond Schroeder, Marian Saalweachter, David Schroeder, and Robert Schroeder.

The family will receive loved ones for a visitation at Denning Family Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, IN on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 in the evening.
