It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rex Albert Reed, who departed this life at the age of 87 on September 2, 2025. Rex was born on August 13, 1938, in Sevier County, TN, the son of the late Millard Fillmore and Dessie Belle Ingle Reed.
Rex honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1956 until 1959, embodying the spirit of dedication and service.
He found joy and companionship when he united in marriage with Barbara Matthews on December 23, 1985, and together they created a beautiful life full of love and support.
Rex had a strong faith that guided him. He worked diligently as a Millwright at General Motors for many years, where his commitment and work ethic earned him the respect of his colleagues.
Rex was a passionate Tennessee fan, proudly cheering on his team with unwavering enthusiasm. He found solace in the waters as an avid fisherman, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Yet his greatest joy, however, came from spending cherished moments with his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Rex's legacy of love, service, and devotion will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. As we celebrate his remarkable life, let us remember him for the kindness and warmth he spread to everyone he encountered.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Matthews Reed of Waynesboro, TN; son, Jewett Michael Reed (Tina) of Defiance, OH; daughters, Rhonda Extrand of Napolean, OH, Ashley Reed Rich of Waynesboro, TN, and Harlie Sandusky of Waynesboro, TN; step-daughters, Lisa Kelly of Waynesboro, TN, and Terri Kelly of Waynesboro, TN; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Millard Fillmore and Dessie Belle Ingle; and stepson, James Kelly.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 5, 2025 from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm service time at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Waynesboro, TN.
