Rhodes "Cherry" "Cherry" Stokes

Mr. Rhodes "Cherry" Stokes, 78, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 9, 2025.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 17, 2025 at 4:00 PM in the Farmer Funeral Chapel in Ayden. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:30 PM prior to the service.

Cherry was a native of Pitt County and a lifelong resident of Ayden. He practiced law in Greenville for 50 years. His office had an open-door policy, which meant you could walk in and pull up a chair without an appointment. He took a lot of pride in giving a helping hand to all of his clients.

Cherry also served his well-loved community of Ayden where he was a coach and teacher who liked to help shape and mold the minds of those who wanted to learn. He served on the Arts and Recreation Board for 11 years and was recently promoted to the Chair.

Cherry loved the weather, especially long warm summer days. He would give you a forecast whether you asked for it or not. He had a deep passion and love for history, antiques, the Washington Redskins and Elvis Presley. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a man with a warm personality, being quick witted, and having a delightful charm. He embraced life with humor and lived every day never letting it go to waste.

Cherry was preceded in death by his parents, Rhodes Corey and Hazel Cherry Stokes.

He is survived by: his daughters, Raven Cherry Stokes and Kristen Wu; sons, Rhodes Corey Stokes II and Lanny Chris Horne; brother, Billy Stokes; granddaughter, Audrey Horne; grandson, Emerson Wu; and special companion, Robin Bossert.
