Richard was born July 15, 1934, in Saginaw, to the late Gordon and Hazel (Merryman) Axtell. He attended Montrose Community Schools where he received his high school diploma with the class of 1952 and worked at General Motors for 30 years, retiring in 1983. Richard continued to support his hometown team, the Montrose Rams, by attending the local games and proudly represented Michigan State University. The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to his best friend, Billy Persails, along with the staff at St. Mary's Hospital, Compassus Hospice, and Medilodge of Montrose for their compassion and care during Richard's final days.
