Richard Balestreri Obituary

Richard James Balestreri

November 11, 1952 - April 5, 2025

Sacramento, California - Richard "Rich" James Balestreri, 72, of Sacramento, passed away suddenly on Saturday, April 5, 2025, while participating in a cycling event in Amador County. In a heartbreaking yet fitting moment, Rich left this world doing what he loved - riding on the open road, tackling each climb and descent with the same passion and vitality he brought to every part of his life.

Rich's greatest joy was his family. A devoted husband, loving father, adoring grandfather, and loyal brother, he cherished the time he spent with those he loved. He shared a deep and joyful partnership with his wife, Christine; was endlessly supportive and proud of his daughter, Katherine; and found limitless delight in spoiling his grandchildren, Lucy and Thomas. His family remembers him as a constant source of support, wisdom, humor, and love - a man whose presence brought warmth and energy to every gathering.

Born on November 11, 1952, to Evelyn and Thomas Balestreri in Sacramento, Rich was raised in a close-knit family with deep roots in the community. He attended St. Ignatius Parish School and graduated from Jesuit High School in 1970. He went on to earn a BS in Business Administration from Sacramento State University and later completed his MBA at Santa Clara University.

Professionally, Rich built a distinguished career in real estate development, leading complex projects with vision, expertise, and integrity. Over more than 25 years, he held senior leadership roles at Tim Lewis Communities, K. Hovnanian Homes, and Forecast Homes, among others. His work shaped communities throughout Northern and Central California, and he earned the respect of colleagues for his sharp mind, strategic thinking, and generous mentorship.

Rich brought that same energy and curiosity to his personal life. He was a cyclist, golfer, gardener, beekeeper, grill master, hunter, skier, Hobie Cat sailor, Vespa rider, dog lover, and avid reader. In retirement, he fully embraced his love of cycling and golf. You could often find him on the American River Parkway or at Del Paso Country Club, enjoying a round with his longtime golf buddies. Rich approached every hobby with childlike enthusiasm and a constant drive to learn, always eager to share the latest gear, tips, or discoveries.

A man of deep faith and commitment to service, Rich gave back generously to his community. He served on the Board of Directors for the North State Building Industry Association, led charitable projects like building a home for Neighborhood Housing Services, and dedicated ten years to the Run to Feed the Hungry, benefiting the Sacramento Food Bank. He also served as School Board President at St. Ignatius School and was an active member of St. Ignatius Parish. In every endeavor, Rich lived by the belief that life is meant to be lived generously and joyfully.

Rich is survived by his beloved wife, Christine Balestreri; his daughter, Katherine Balestreri Sampognaro (Philip); and his grandchildren, Lucy and Thomas. He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings: David Balestreri (Carol), Joyce Carroll (Richie), Carol Wright, Tom Balestreri (Trudy), Ken Balestreri (Trudi), and Philip Balestreri (Tracy). Rich never met a stranger - he had a rare gift for turning acquaintances into lifelong friends, and his infectious laugh, welcoming smile, and adventurous spirit will be missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of Rich's life will be held at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish, 3235 Arden Way, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16. A luncheon reception will follow at Del Paso Country Club, 3333 Marconi Ave, Sacramento.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Ignatius Parish School, Jesuit High School, or The Del Paso Foundation, continuing Rich's legacy of faith-filled education and community support.

I just heard from another neighbor from the Los Coches days that Richard passed away. Though I hadn´t seen him in years, I have such wonderful memories of my cherished friend with whom I shared so many adventures. We built a telegraph and later a tin can telephone set that stretched between our homes. We designed and started to build a inner tube powered airship that we planned to launch from the roof of the Balestreri family home...with 2 year old Philip as the test pilot! But what stands out most, above and beyond all the fun we had together, was Richard´s rare character and good heart, his integrity that shone through from the first moment I met him. Though he was a year younger, he was not just a friend but a guide to me. Richard had a wisdom at an early age that most people take a lifetime to attain.
One example-I had the idea of playing catch with a football in my parents´ living room..Richard threw a well aimed pass to me that slipped through my hands and shattered my mother´s precious milk glass punchbowl. Richard and I were heartbroken. Richard insisted on staying until my mother returned home from the store so he could apologize to her. What 8 year old kid would choose to stay rather than run home?
That was who Richard was.

I send my blessings and deepest condolences to the family. Though it has been so many years since we spent every summer today together, i still cling to those memories of our childhood adventures.
With all my love,
Steve

I am deeply saddened by Rich's passing. I saw him only a couple of times as adults, but was delighted by his warmth. I wish our paths had crossed on the bike trail.

Everthing stated in the Obituary is Richard.
My best memories are working with Richard in the Summers at Bishop Monogue High School.
Having squirt gun fights with sspray cleaner bottles when cleaning desks and mostly driving our boss Old George crazy.
After work we would always had a few brews with fake id.
From there Richard moved up to Oregon with his work. While looking for a place to live we went Duck hunting often and he helped install swing set for my two young children{who loved him). He was always willing to help.
Rest in peace my friend. You will be missed!

Such beautiful words written in your memory my dear cousin. Memories of growing up with family dinners and trips to Sacramento are forever a part of my life. I´ve always held a deep respect for you and how you lived your life. A true model for inspiration, I will think of you cycling as I continue to ride my horse with the same passion. I am planting my summer garden this weekend and will do so in honor of you and will always remember you as I tend to my bees fellow beekeeper. You left too soon but may your family be blessed by your greatness in this lifetime. Love your cousin Linda Schaap (Brain).
