Richard Berube Obituary

REMSEN - Richard Gilbert Berube, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, February 16, 2026.

He was born in 1937 in Livermore Falls, Maine, a son of the late Wilfred and Maria Gilbert Berube. As a son of French Canadians, he was fluent in French. After attending Livermore Fall High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp, where he completed his recruit training at Parris Island located within Port Royal, South Carolina, and where he also earned his GED. In 1962, he was united in marriage and shared a life with Monique Dionne of Lewiston, Maine. They spent 51 years together until her passing in 2013. As a couple, they both loved music, and Richard was an excellent ballroom dancer. The couple moved to Boston, MA where they began their family and lived for five years before relocating to New York State. They lived in Hyde Park, Troy, and Utica before moving to Remsen where they remained for many years. In the 1970's, he earned an Associate's degree from Mohawk Valley Community College. Richard worked as a rural letter carrier for the Remsen Post Office for nearly 25 years before retiring in 2000.

In his 30's, he joined the Jaycees where he affectionately became known as Dick. He was also a Rotarian and a Mason. He was a member of the Stittville VFW Post #8259, Boonville Knights of Columbus, and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #2158 in Boonville. He enjoyed the charity work through these organizations and was most proud of his volunteerism for Shriners Children's, transporting patients to Springfield, MA for care.

His favorite activities were playing pool and cards especially cribbage and pitch, including tournaments. If you knew him, you could easily picture him at the diner with a black coffee and a scratch off, on a Friday night at the racetrack or casino, or out and about walking or riding his bike. He loved to drive and travel throughout Upstate New York, Massachusetts and Canada, meeting and talking to people wherever he went. Dick was one of a kind who never met a stranger.

In his family, he was known as Richard, Dad, and Uncle Dick, but once he became a grandfather, he was Pepere first and foremost. He is survived by three children, Patricia (Nick) Giannatelli of New Hartford, John (Jessica) Berube of Rome, and Joline (Barry) Ringstrom of Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren, Nicholas and Matthew Giannatelli and Jacob Berube and Emily Berube (Logan) Wilcox; three great grandchildren, Eliza, Ellie and Logan, Jr. Wilcox; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife; one daughter, Laurie Marie Berube; one granddaughter, Holly Marie Giannatelli; a sister, Lucille; three brothers Robert (Bob), Norman, and Gerald (Gerry); and a dear sister-in-law, Rose Berube.

I have only met Dick a few time, but loved the stories that Joline would share. He was loved and will surely be missed. May God open his arms and welcome him home. My love to you Joline, Pat, and John. Please remember all the good times and healing will soon follow. Sincerely Tammy Hubbard
