SWANTON - Richard Joseph Brier, 86, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2025, in St. Albans, Vermont. Born on April 26, 1939, in Highgate, Vermont. Richard lived a life marked by devotion to family, service to his country, and a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of his home state.
Richard proudly served in the United States Navy abroad the USS Champlain for four years. His time in the Navy instilled in him a lifelong sense of duty and pride that he carried with him throughout his life.
Following his military service, Richard embarked on a long and successful career at IBM, where he worked for over 30 years. His dedication and work ethic left a lasting impression on colleagues and friends alike.
At the heart of Richard's life was his beloved wife Julie (Favero) Brier. Together they shared 63 wonderful years of marriage - a testament to their enduring love and partnership. Their bond was one of mutual respect and unwavering support.
Richard was a devoted father to his two children: Christopher and his wife Shawn Brier, grand pups Molly and Tater. Daughter Beth and her husband Larry, grandsons Tucker and Sulley. He took great joy in watching his family grow and cherished every moment spent with them. He was especially proud of his grandsons, Tucker and his wife Kayla, and Sulley and his wife Kenzie. The arrival of great-granddaughter Tali brought him immense happiness, as did the anticipation of baby Greene's arrival in April.
He was predeceased by his parents, Douglas Brier, and Bernaudette Boucher Brier. He leaves behind two brothers, Douglas and Carey Brier.
A man who found peace in nature, Richard loved fishing on Lake Champlain and the Missisquoi River. These serene waters were more than just favorite fishing spots - they were places where he found joy with family by his side. Summers often included cherished trips to Wells Beach in Maine, where he relished time spent walking along the shore with Julie or watching waves roll in.
Faith played an important role throughout Richard's life. He and Julie were lifelong members of the Church of Nativity, where they were married - a spiritual home that remained central to their lives together.
Above all else, Richard will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. His legacy lives on through the generations he helped shape with kindness, strength, and quiet wisdom.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire all who carry forward the values he held dear.
