Effingham, Kansas….Richard Lynn Butner, was born March 16, 1947 in Iowa Point, Kansas in his grandparents' house, the first of three boys to Laurence (Jeff) and Opal (Tilton) Butner. He passed in the early morning hours September 22, 2025 in North Kansas City, Missouri hospice house, at the age of 78.

The family later moved to Everest, Kansas where he graduated from Everest High School. Following high school, he attended barber school in Topeka until he was drafted in the Army to serve his country during the Vietnam Conflict, serving his time in Germany. When he returned home, he worked for Union Pacific Railroad and retired with 37 years of service.

Richard married Glenda Sullivan, November 18, 1967. Richard was at Fort Carson, Colorado and came home on leave before he left for Germany and proposed to Glenda. They planned a wedding in a week and was married in the Methodist Church in Everest.

Richard volunteered at his local VFW where he mowed grass for many years. He enjoyed fishing on Paradise Lake where he and Glenda resided. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Glenda of the home, a daughter Tina Wagner (Darryl), son Jeff Butner, three granddaughters: Sarah and Cody Martin, Grace and Kortin Blevins, Deni and Rex Bruning; two great-granddaughters: Karsyn and Kolby; two great-grandsons: Nash and Axel. His youngest brother Michael Butner (Jody) also survives, along with many nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents Jeff and Opal Butner; and a brother Larry Butner.

A celebration of Richard's eternal life is planned for 11 a.m. Friday, September 26, 2025, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland. Chris Boaz will officiate. Interment will follow with military honors a courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard and Atchison Funeral Honors Team, at the Highland Cemetery.

Immediately following graveside services, there will be a dinner provided for family and friends at the Atchison VFW.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Thursday where the family will meet from 6 until 7:30 that evening.
