Richard L. Buttenhoff
Age 77, Formerly of Savage
Passed away on Friday, March 17, 2023 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard; his mother, Eleanor; and his brother, Gene. Survived by his sisters; Diane (Virgil) Rose, Joan (Frank) Opay, sister-in-law, Joan Buttenhoff, special friend, Kelly Byzewski, nieces, nephew, and other relatives and friends. Richard was born in Watertown, MN on October 8, 1945. He spent his early childhood years on his parent's farm in Howard Lake, MN, but most of his school years were spent in Minneapolis, MN. He graduated from Washburn High School in 1963. Richard served our country in the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1966, at the time of the Vietnam Conflict, on ships USS Ticonderoga and USS Kearsarge. After his active duty discharge he served three years in the Naval Reserve. In June of 1969, he graduated from Metropolitan State Junior College with an Associate of Arts Degree.
Richard was a hard worker. He started working during his school years, by caddying at local golf courses and delivering newspapers. After his Navy service, he began a long career with the Post Office, working for them for 57 years, attaining a supervisory position. He also returned to delivering newspaper for the Star Tribune as an adult along with his fulltime job with USPS. Coin collecting was one of his hobbies. Another pastime that he enjoyed years ago, was using a metal detector to comb beaches, parks, etc., looking for metal objects. Spending time at casinos and occasional weeks in the summer at Gull Lake in Brainerd, MN was how he relaxed.
