Richard Cantes Obituary

Richard C. Cantes

78, of Egg Harbor Township, passed away peacefully at home, on December 29, 2025, surrounded by love, with his wife, Peggy at his side. Born on May 19, 1947, in Atlantic City, NJ. Rich spent his life deeply rooted in the community he loved. A graduate Atlantic City High School's Class of 1965. He began his working life as a special delivery postman at the Atlantic City Post Office before pursuing his lifelong calling in law enforcement. In 1978, Rich joined the Atlantic City Police Department through the Safe Streets Program. Over the next 26 years, he proudly served as a patrol officer, a member of the Motorcycle Squad, and later in Records and ID, retiring in 2004. Rich was also a proud U.S. Army veteran, serving in Turkey during the Vietnam conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1971. In his free time, Rich found joy on the water aboard his 25-foot boat, bowling – where he once achieved a perfect 300 game – and trying his luck at the Joker Poker machines. He loved Star Trek and Miami Vice, photography, and collecting Atlantic City memorabilia, including an impressive collection of approximately 500 photographs. Rich is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Cantes (nee McLees); his Goddaughter, KellyLee Thomas; his niece, Michelle Schad (Bill), and nephews Robert Cantes, Joseph Dixon, and Michael Dixon; and finally, his treasured companion, Bellaboo, the Chihuahua. He was predeceased by his parents, Josephine and Joseph Cantes; and his brother, Joseph. Also his fur babies, Rusty, Raisin, Coco, Smokey, and Lexi. Memorial donations may be given to the Humane Society of Atlantic County. Burial will be private. A Celebration of Life will be held in late spring. Condolences may be extended to the family at ghwimberg.com.

So sorry to hear of Richie's passing. We were related, my grandmother Nunziata Martino and his grandmother Tressa were sisters. We knew each other as children. He was a good guy. Prayers of comfort to you and your family.

Richie was admired by everyone he came in contact with. He loved Atlantic City and collected so many photos of the city that dated back to the early 1900's.
Rich served his country during the Vietnam saga, and as a mailman in AC. He then joined ACPD as a motorcycle patrolman ,almost leaving us too early due to a horrible accident on his cycle. Later coming back in the ID bureau. Our condolences to the love of his life Peggy and the Cantes' family. Your Cousin Ron and Linda
