Richard Carothers Obituary

Age 70, originally from Sheraden, but later Hopewell, has passed away peacefully after a brave struggle with synovial sarcoma on Tuesday, March 7, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 49 years Ruth Carothers; his son Damon Carothers and daughter Courtney Carothers and son-in-law Jason Kwiatkowski; his two sisters, Susan and Melissa Carothers; goddaughter Jennifer Matheny and her husband (Jason); as well as his two wonderful granddaughters, Sola and Annika Kwiatkowski who were the absolute joy of his life; and numerous nieces and nephews. Rich was a collector of early rock-n-roll records and had an intense love of music. He was an original part of the Pittsburgh DooWop scene and is beloved by many of his fellow collectors. He traveled to car shows every year since the 60's and enjoyed driving more than any other hobby. At age 50 he began painting and created over 100 works of art, and was featured at the Shadyside Art Festival. In addition to all of that Rich was one of the funniest and most entertaining people who ever lived. He could tell a story like no one else and his family and friends will miss him immensely. The Carothers Family looks forward to seeing friends, extended family, classmates from Holy Innocents High School, former co-workers and fellow service men.

My deepest sympathy to the entire Carothers family. I had the pleasure to work with Rich at USAirways PIT Res. I remember him bringing his paintings to the office & actually wanting our comments on them. His many stories, his great laugh & sense of humor. He will be missed.

I worked with Rich in reservations in the late 80s. We both worked afternoons and many times we sat next to each other. He was so much fun. His obituary describes him perfectly. He also frequently talked about Ruthie and his kids. You could tell how much he loved all of you. I am so sorry that he had to go through this and I am sorry that he is gone and my sympathy goes to all of you. He was bigger than life and it is hard to lose somebody like that.

Ruth, Damian, and Courtney, so sorry to hear about Richs' passing. We were young kids when we both met Rich as our manager at Burger King in North Versailles in the early 70's. He left a lasting impression on both of us with his guidance, laughter, love of music and professionalism. We heard of his passing on the Frankie Day show and were stunned. We remember a trip to Youngstown with Rich to buy records at our aunts house. Also memories of your homes in Squirrel hill and Sheriden-the record room and water fountain. Our hearts are broken for your loss. Your memories will carry you through these difficult times, may God bless you all .

With deepest sympathy to the family of Rich Carothers. I had the pleasure of working the overnight shift with Rich at US Airways and he was great at making me laugh. I was happy to see Rich at the US Airways picnic last July. He was like a stand up comedian, he had us in stitches. I will treasure those memories of Rich and all his great stories for years to come. May God keep you all in the palm of his hand.

One of the sweetest, funniest men I have ever known. I worked with Rich for many years on the overnights at Usairways and there was never a dull moment when he was around. I always enjoyed all of his stories and all of his and his drawings, or doodles as he would call them. He will be missed by many.

I worked w/ Rich @ USAirways and he definitely was a great story teller..........he was the nicest person.........even @ our PIT RES Reunion last summer when I saw him , I said Hi Rich ! how are you .....he said right off that the had stage 4 cancer..... OH, I'm so sorry.......he said, it's OK.....it is what it is........I didn't know he was ill prior to that........but I remember when he got out of his car he was standing up on the hill looking @ everyone, taking us all in............he was the best! And there wasn't any man any prouder of his children and all their accomplishments.............
