Richard DeMore Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Smith Funeral Home - Mantua on Mar. 30, 2026.
Richard Wallace DeMore, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on March 28, 2026. Known for his quiet nature, steady presence, and dry sense of humor, Richard lived his life with gentleness and patience.

Richard was born at home in Gloucester City to Samuel and Grace (nee McKay) DeMore. He spent his early years working on his grandfather's farm in Deptford, NJ. He later joined the United States Army at the age of 17 and served as an MP in Texas and Virginia before beginning a lifelong career as a land surveyor and retired from Acu-Pro Surveys in 2000. He approached his work the same way he approached everything else: methodically, thoughtfully, and never in a hurry. He believed in doing things the right way, not the fast way.

A true car enthusiast, Richard loved auto racing, classic cars, and anything with an engine. He even drove the Monster Mile at Dover Motor Speedway twice. His garage was his happy place, a space where he could tinker for hours, lost in the simple joy of making things run just a little better. If you ever needed to find him, that's where he'd be - tools laid out, radio humming in the background, content in his element.

Those who knew Richard will remember his quiet strength, his dry wit delivered at just the right moment, and the way he made people feel at ease simply by being himself. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and love that will continue to guide the family he cherished so deeply.

Richard is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy DeMore; daughters, Wendy DeMore, Sheri Clark (Roger); and three grandchildren Emma Clark, Zachary Sims, and Holly Clark. He is also survived by his bother, Donald DeMore (Barbara), sister, Regina Scherfel, and sister-in-law, Lois DeMore. He was predeceased by his brother, Samuel DeMore.
