Richard Wellington Dillon, 85, of Burlington, died at 6:04 AM Monday, October 3, 2011, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born April 6, 1926, in Burlington, he was the son of Robert S. and Blanche E. Wellington Dillon. On August 29, 1948, he married Arlene P. Dye in Ottumwa IA. She died March 18, 2010. Dick worked for 23 years at the Burlington Fire Department. He was a 1943 graduate of Ottumwa High School in Ottumwa, IA. He was a U.S. Marines Veteran, serving in the Pacific with the First Marine Division during WWII from May 1944 until May 1946 where he was awarded a Bronze Star. Dick was a member of the Marines' first Amphibious Tractor Company. He was of the Methodist faith and was a member of the Hamilton-Walters Marine Corp League, Ski Iowans, Bike Burlington and he loved the outdoors. He volunteered at the Des Moines County Historical Society. Survivors include one daughter, Rebecca (Mike) Grundman of Corning, IA, four grandchildren, Aaron (Gloria) Grundman, Adam Grundman, Elliott Mohler, and McKenzie Mohler; four great-grandchildren, Dillon and Alec Grundman and Isaac and Owen Grundman; two sisters, Cheryl Mihalevich of Shelbina, MO, and Wanda George of El Paso, IL, and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Bonnie Sue Mohler, who died in 1990. Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home. The funeral service for Mr. Dillon will be 10:00 AM Thursday, October 6, 2011, at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Jerry Rigdon officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the Hamilton-Walters Marine Corp League. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Hass-Thielen community room following the interment. Memorial have been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society and the Asbury United Methodist Church.
