Richard Fowler's Life Reflections
On Monday morning at 9:45 am, December 16, 2024, the angel of silence came into the operating room of Prisma Health Richland Hospital and with chilly fingers, forever sealed the lips of Deacon Richard "Guy" Fowler. Affectionately known as "Guy Richard", he was born November 9, 1943, in Calhoun County to the late John Fowler, Sr. and Sinclair Ricks-Fowler.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Earl Ricks, Sr., Joe "Maxie" Ricks, and John Fowler, and sister, Susie Ricks.
While growing up in Eutawville, Guy attended the public schools of Orangeburg County, and graduated from Roberts High School with the Class of 1962.
A few years after graduating from Roberts High, Guy was drafted into the US Army. He served two years in the army, during which he experienced combat in the Vietnam War. He was a member of the 25th Infantry Division ("Tropic Lightning" Division), 2nd Brigade, Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion/5th Infantry (Mechanized). His unit earned the nickname Bobcats.
On Christmas Eve, December 24, 1965, the Bobcats, along with the rest of the division, received orders to depart for Vietnam, Cu Chi district, located in a region known as the Iron Triangle; there, Guy and his unit endured relentless attacks from both Viet Cong guerillas and the North Vietnam Regular Army; his unit suffered higher than usual casualties since the district of Cu Chi sat on top of a colony of underground tunnels the Viet Cong used to harass the division night and day as they worked to establish a divisional base camp and conduct daily patrols throughout 1966.
After a harrowing year of combat in Vietnam, Guy returned home to a nation that failed to show any appreciation to the soldiers who returned home battered and broken. Guy began working diligently with Edisto Asphalt Company alongside his older brother "Maxie". Later, he joined Tidewater Construction and worked until (?), when he retired.
In June 1967, he was united in holy matrimony to Annie Ruth Guess. This union was blessed with one son. Guy will be fondly remembered for his loving spirit, his love for his family, and his indomitable spirit to return home from an unpopular war.
Guy leaves to cherish his fond memories, his son, Jemal Fowler of Eutawville, SC; granddaughters Laviante and Brooklyn Fowler, and a special great-granddaughter Stella. His sister-in-love, Geraldine (Willie) Hill of Mt. Vernon, NY; Annette Guess of Vance, Wonetta (James) Edy of Allendale, SC; brothers-in-love, James (Mattie) Guess, of Eutawville, SC and Leroy (Angela) Guess, of Orangeburg, SC; and Sammie (Edith) Guess of Fayetteville, NC; sisters-in-love, Nellie Lucille Ricks and Betty Fowler, of Eutawville, SC; and a host of family and friends that he loved very much.
