Richard M. Fretz, affectionately known to many as "Pops," passed away peacefully due to natural causes on September 13, 2025, in his hometown of Dover, Delaware. Born on January 3, 1951, to the late Virginia Cole-Fretz and Karl Fretz, Richard grew up imbued with a spirit of kindness and an unwavering sense of family that he carried throughout his life.
Richard spent over three decades as a dedicated truck driver, a career that allowed him to crisscross the country, seeing its beauty and meeting people from all walks of life. His work ethic and reliability were hallmarks of his character, earning him the respect and friendship of many colleagues and associates.
A devout Christian, Richard lived his faith through his actions, embodying the words of Mother Teresa: "Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love." He approached life with a gentle heart, always ready to lend a hand or share a kind word, touching the lives of those around him with his generosity and loving nature.
Richard's passion extended beyond his professional life and into his personal interests. An avid fisherman, he found solace and joy in the quiet moments by the water, a hobby he often shared with friends and family. Wrestling brought excitement and entertainment, but nothing compared to the thrill of squirrel hunting, a pastime that brought him closer to nature and the simpler pleasures of life.
Family was the cornerstone of Richard's world. He is survived by his three sons, William H. Steele, Michael D. Steele Sr. (Angel), and Matthew S. Fretz. His legacy continues through his nine grandchildren, Andrew, Mikey, Dakota, Harley, Autumn, Echo, Cameron, Shyanne, and Mason, as well as his four great-grandchildren, two boys and two girls, whose lives are a testament to his love and guidance. He is also survived by his brother, Joseph Fretz. Richard's memory is also cherished by many more family members whose lives he touched.
Pops' ability to weave love into the fabric of his daily life made every encounter with him a cherished memory. His gentle nature, generous spirit, and the love he shared will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
As we bid farewell to Richard M. Fretz, we reflect on a life well-lived, a journey marked by the love he gave and the love he received. In the hearts of his family and friends, Pops' legacy will continue to inspire and guide, a beacon of the love and kindness that defined him. Rest in peace, Richard. Your memory will forever be a blessing to us all.
