Richard Gottsacker died June 6th, 2022, at the age of 80. Known as Dick, Rich, Richie, and Richard, he served as a UAW member at Polar Ware for 44 years. Prior he served in the US Navy on the USS Huntington.
His wild, white hair reminiscent of Einstein grew even wilder with his frequent bike rides in the spring, summer, fall, and yes - even winter throughout Sheboygan's northside. These rides often led him to relax to a band at Fountain Park, crash under the waves in the Lake, or buy scratch-off lottery tickets from the mini-mart. He was a collector of coins and baseball cards, always on the hunt, especially after Peaschek closed his card shop.
Richard's energy bled into his family, which led to adventures and misadventures alike. His grandest adventure was with Karen Snippen, whom he married November 6, 1965. They hammered on limestone quarries in search of trilobite fossils, only to have rocks tumble on their heads; they took a wrong turn in a car loaded with camping gear from top to bottom to above, only to end up in a towns Fourth of July parade. Each adventure was a story and a laugh.
Richard is survived by his brother Ronald, his sons Ryan and Patrick, and grandchildren Aurora and Elowyn. He was preceded by Karen, son Paul, and siblings Kenneth and Delores.
Richard held a thrifty independence to his last days. He was able to maintain his independence in part to the wonderful community of Sheboygan. Strangers saved him with CPR and bought lunch, neighbors shoveled snow, and friends got him to appointments. He enjoyed the beauty you preserved at Maywood and the string of summer festivals you hosted. He appreciated your companionship at the bars as he sipped a Miller with ice.
Richard treasured summer, but a bit of rotten luck prevented him from enjoying another. I ask as you enjoy this one, and please share your memories of Richard at [email protected]. Coming summer of 2023, we will have a celebration. Announcements will come. Don't work too hard.
