Richard G. Grip, 85, a resident of Dorset, VT, went home to be with our Lord on September 6, 2025, at the Equinox Terrace in Manchester, VT, after a long illness.
Dick was born in Weehawken, NJ, on March 12, 1940, the son of the late Grace (Miller) and Herman W. Grip, and lived his childhood and most adult years in Secaucus, NJ. He used to love to reminisce about his childhood, reflecting on swimming in the Hackensack River with friends and cousins and the bygone farms that were scattered throughout the town. He graduated from Weehawken High School (NJ) and married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Herzig of North Bergen, NJ, in 1960. Together, they purchased a home in Secaucus, where they raised their children and resided for 54 years before moving to Dorset, VT in 2018.
After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Upon discharge, he attended banking school and started his career at Chase Manhattan Bank in NYC. While working full-time and raising a family, he attended Pace University in the evenings to obtain his B.A. in Business. Dick worked for many years in NYC in high-level banking positions, retiring from Fuji Bank and Trust in 2001. Once retired, he worked part-time at the Secaucus Public Library, helping patrons find books, assisting with computer searches, and working at the annual Mini-Fair event.
Dick was also very involved in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church as both a parishioner and member of the church council, acting as Treasurer. He was also a Mason and a member of the local Lions Club. During his free time, you would find him in the garden, watching the local NY sports teams, or golfing. He loved spending time with family and especially enjoyed eating his wife's delicious cooking and famous apple pie.
In addition to his parents and brother, Herman (Bud) Grip, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia, of nearly 65 years. He is survived by his children, Donna Fichera (Keith Huntley) of Wyckoff, NJ, and Richard S. Grip (Rehana) of East Dorset, VT, his five grandchildren, Vincent Fieg, Sarah Hager, Melissa Fichera, Meghan Grip, and Jillian Grip, and two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Natalie Hager.
A church service celebrating his life will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dick's memory may be made to Neighbor to Neighbor or the Northshire Rescue Squad, both located in Manchester, or the VNA & Hospice of the Southwest Region.
