Richard A. Hahn, 86, of Carmel passed away Saturday, July 19, 2025, surrounded by his family. Richard was born August 30, 1938, in Columbus, Ohio to the late Samuel and Elizabeth Jane Hahn.

“Dick,” as his friends called him, graduated from The Ohio State University with his Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and PhD in Pharmacology. While pursuing his advanced degrees, he met “the love of his life,” Barbara J. Lamb, a schoolteacher and fellow OSU graduate, while on a blind date. They married shortly thereafter.

After graduation Richard worked for Smith, Kline & French in Philadelphia conducting pharmaceutical research. Based on his skills and passion, Eli Lilly & Co recruited him, where he worked in drug development as a Cardiovascular Pharmacologist and Senior Research Scientist.

During Richard’s career his doctoral research on salivary secretions was published in the British Journal of Pharmacology. He was also the recipient of The Jack L. Beal Postbaccalaureate Award for outstanding contributions made to pharmaceutical sciences. Richard invented a method for minimizing and containing reperfusion injury in mammals, which is patented, and developed a method of blocking norepinephrine release from peripheral sympathetic nerve terminals, which is also patented.

During his retirement, Richard was a world traveler and graduated from Purdue's Master Gardener program. He enjoyed a part-time job at Rosie’s, where his broad-based knowledge of gardening, and sharp, witty humor delighted many a novice customer. Nature and his many Labradors were important fixtures throughout his life.

Dick was a fan of fine dining, especially French cuisine. He learned to cook many dishes, but Christmas favorites were his Salmon en Croute and Pecan Torte paired with a fine Montrachet…..simply wonderful!

Richard was preceded in death by his son, Andrew A. Hahn and his wife, Barbara J. Hahn. He is survived by his loving daughter, Tiffany Hahn, and three jumbo sized doodles (Beau, Milo, and Cooper) who provided companionship, joy, and purpose to both Dick and Barbara during the past few years.

Family and friends are invited to gather at 8:30 AM on Friday, August 8th, at Flanner Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Conner Suite, where a service will follow at 10:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society for Hamilton County.
