Richard William Hawkey, of Wylie, Texas, passed away on May 4, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born July 31, 1946, in Niskayuna, New York, to Edwin David and Dorothy Helen (Carmichael) Hawkey, Richard's life was marked by a quiet strength, unwavering kindness, and a sharp intellect.
Richard's education began at Draper School in Rotterdam, NY, followed by graduation from Mont Pleasant High School in Schenectady, NY in 1964, a school also attended by his mother and siblings. He had many cherished memories of his childhood in upstate New York which he chose as his final resting place.
Richard attended Clarkson College in Potsdam, NY then attended Arizona State University where he graduated Alpha Pi Mu with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He then earned a Master of Science Degree in Computer Science from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
Following his graduation from Arizona State University, Richard embarked on a successful career with Texas Instruments in Dallas, Texas continuing with Raytheon after its acquisition of his business unit. After retiring, Richard lived in Texas for the remainder of his life.
Richard possessed a passion for music, amassing a substantial collection of albums and CDs. A devoted fan of Bob Dylan, his love for the artist's music will forever resonate with his loved ones. Richard's other hobbies included running, walking and baseball. Even late in life, Richard was known to walk 7 to 15 miles a day. He had several acquaintances he had met on the walking trails over the years. He was known for his kindness, intelligence, and engaging conversations, often peppered with fascinating statistical insights.
His bond with his sister Linda was exceptionally close; she joined him in Texas in 1978, creating a lifelong connection. Never marrying or having children of his own, he embraced Linda's children, Ryan and Amanda, and their families as his own. He cherished all the time spent together and many lasting memories were created. Richard has several siblings with whom he shared wonderful memories from his childhood and visits over the years.
Predeceased by his parents, Edwin and Dorothy Hawkey, and brother James Hawkey, Richard is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Edward Hayes; nephew Ryan Hayes and wife Sarah; niece Amanda Ulrich and husband Logan; great-niece and nephews Rilynn and Colton Hayes, and Camden and Coby Ulrich; siblings Diana (Victor) Fiano, David Hawkey, Carol (Paul) Fatato, Kenneth (Stephen Briscoe) Hawkey, and John (Gina) Hawkey; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Avalon Care for the exceptional care provided to Richard in his final months, particularly to caregiver Misha and the dedicated team.
A private celebration of Richard's life will be held by the family.
