Richard Eugene Hoffman, age 79, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, surrounded by his wife and three children.
Richard was born on January 11, 1947, in Toledo, Ohio to Harold and Veronica Hoffman. A lifelong learner from the beginning, he pursued his education at Aquinas College, where his love of language and literature flourished. He continued his education at BGSU, earning a Masters for rehabilitation counseling.
Richard dedicated much of his life to education and service. He taught multiple subjects and grades, and inspired students with his quick wit and deep appreciation for the written word. Later, he served as a vocational rehabilitation counselor at BVR for the state of Ohio, offering guidance and support to those in need. No matter his role, Richard was always teaching gently, thoughtfully, and often without anyone realizing they were in the middle of a lesson.
Learning was never confined to the classroom. A true lover of books and knowledge, Richard read more than 1,300 titles throughout his lifetime, with historical fiction being his favorite genre. He always had a book within reach, ready to share a fact or story, or recommend a new book or author. A study abroad experience across England, Scotland, and Ireland in his early adulthood profoundly shaped his worldview and remained one of the most formative experiences of his life. Inspired by that, family vacations were immersive educational adventures, filled with explorations of museums, national parks, historical sites, and gardens. He cherished to his core the time he spent at all the beautiful places he found throughout his life.
Richard's kindness and generosity was evident in all he did. He was an advocate for the world around him, both for people and the planet. He was an environmental steward, recycling before it was ever popular and always encouraging others to care and do the right thing. His love of learning overlapped with his love of nature and creativity. He enjoyed gardening, needlepoint, stained glass, woodworking, and much more, approaching each craft with patience and artistry.
Above all, Richard loved his family. Words cannot capture the husband that he was, and recounting bedtime stories and carefully curated family trips barely touch the surface of his fatherhood. He was an ever present source of wisdom in all matters, be they trivial or significant. He was a loving and thoughtful husband, an engaged and devoted father, and the kind of man who showed up for all - for every event, every milestone, and every ordinary Tuesday that mattered.
Richard's definition of family rarely knew a boundary. His warmth, kindness, and easy smile endeared him to all. He was a welcoming face and an ever present conversationalist. He adored all of his family and friends, finding special joy in his nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and pets. He was likewise adored and appreciated, not only for his wisdom but for his jokes and humor. A playful soul at heart, Richard delighted in the happiness of others. He sought purpose in sharing his wealth of knowledge, experience, and resources with those around him and ultimately making the world a better place.
His legacy lives on in the lessons he taught, the laughter he sparked, the stories he shared, and the relationships he fostered. He will never know how much he was truly loved. His absence will forever leave a painful vacancy that can never be filled, but his family and friends will carry his memory forward with gratitude and pride.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Veronica (Swartz) Hoffman, his sister Patricia (Hoffman) Rossman, and his parents-in-law, John and Josephine (Wolfe) McGuire.
Richard is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Jo (McGuire) Hoffman; children, Lucas Hoffman, Jill Hoffman and Mary Beth Hoffman; grandchildren, Zillion and Myia'Lynn, sister Lois Hoffman, brother Terry Hoffman, and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may visit from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. with a prayer service and sharing of memories at 5:30 pm. On Monday, March 9, 2026, visitation will continue beginning at 10:00 a.m., at the Most Blessed Sacrament Parish, 2240 Castlewood Dr., Toledo 43613, followed by the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
