Richard "Dick" Hoglund, age 75, of Grosse Pointe, MI, passed away peacefully at his home on August 13, 2024.
Born September 1, 1948, in Duluth, Minnesota, to the late Justa and Hazel Hoglund, Dick attended and graduated from Duluth Central High in 1966 and the University of Minnesota – Duluth in 1970.
In 1970, Dick began his esteemed Federal Law Enforcement career when he was hired by the United States Customs Service and served as a Federal Sky Marshal in Duluth, Minnesota. Following the beginning of mandatory passenger screening 1973, the Federal Sky Marshal program was partially disbanded and as a result, Dick was reassigned as a Special Agent in Duluth.
Dick worked several years as a Special Agent in Duluth and as a Group Supervisor in Cleveland, Ohio when in 1983, Dick was selected and promoted to serve as the Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Customs Service, Office of Investigations in Detroit, Michigan.
In 1996, Dick was promoted to the position of Deputy Assistant Commissioner, U.S. Customs Service, Office of Investigations and relocated to Washington, DC where he oversaw a workforce of over 1000 until his retirement in 2000.
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, brought Dick out of retirement for a short time, where he was assigned, once again, as the Deputy Assistant Commissioner and worked tirelessly on the transition team that would facilitate the merger of the U.S. Customs Service and the Immigration and Naturalization Service into what would ultimately become the new U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Dick, respected and revered for his 30 years of public service, retired for the last time in 2002.
Dick was an avid sport fan, and he had no greater love than that of his beloved Minnesota Vikings. He enjoyed golfing, boating, and travel.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Carmen W. Hoglund; daughter, Emily Hoglund; son, Kristian (Rebecca) Hoglund; stepson, Anthony Romolino; and five grandchildren, Emma Hewitt, Annika Hoglund, Isabelle Romolino, Lilliana Romolino, and Charlotte Romolino; sister-in-law, Michelle Scinta; brother-in-law, Richard Wehner; and a nephew, Alec Scinta. In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Hoglund; brother, Gary Hoglund; and stepdaughter, Kristina Romolino-Hewitt.
A visitation will take place on Saturday, August 24th from 2pm-6pm at Verheyden Funeral Home located at 16300 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Park, MI, with a service beginning at 5pm.

Carmen and family, we are so sorry for your loss. I didn´t see much of Dick as adults but we had a wonderful childhood together as cousins, always fun times when our families got together. His sense of humor was always evident and he had a sharp wit even as a kid. May your memories bring you comfort.
