Richard Hoitt Obituary

Richard "Rick" Eugene Hoitt passed away peacefully on June 6, 2025, in Tennessee, surrounded by his daughters, where he moved following the passing of his beloved wife of 40 years, Kathy Hoitt, in 2023.

Rick was born Jan. 29, 1951, in Fairbanks, Alaska, to Grace and Robert Hoitt. He attended and graduated from Lathrop High School, class of '69. He then became an electrician and joined his mother, Grace, in pioneering the music, audio and video scene in Fairbanks. The downtown business started as Hoitt's Stereo and Strings on Second Avenue, featuring vinyl records and string instruments. Rick and his friends would often gather there, and it quickly became the place to be for Fairbanks youth.

The business then moved to 1698 Airport Way, where Rick took it to new heights building the shop by hand with close friends, where they began to install auto-starts and car stereo equipment. The name evolved into Hoitt's Stereo and Video with Music on the lower level where they sold records, cassette tapes, CDs and event tickets. On the upper level, you could go into the "Boom-Boom" room to experience the sound and vibrations from the custom subwoofer wall. Across sat the store's best mascot, Odie, the blue-fronted Amazon parrot, who always had a choice word or two when the music started. Hoitt's quickly became the hot spot for the next generation of music and car enthusiast alike. Often you could drive by and see the "Car Club" parked outside featuring all kinds of cars from classic muscle to customized low riders most with custom bass systems installed by Hoitt's. Eventually, they relocated to 1616 S. Cushman St. where it became Hoitt's Plaza where he retired around 2014.

Rick was a family man and an avid collector of many things including unique custom Alaskan ivory, art and guns. He would spend the weekends at Harding Lake, barbecuing, boating, taking the kids tubing, and jet skiing. When he wasn't managing the store, he loved traveling where he cruised around the world, and they often took vacations to Hawaii, Mexico and the West Coast. He loved to hunt and fish where he always showed respect to each harvest and trophy. He instilled that same love and respect into his daughters, who now live all across the globe. Losing a son shortly after birth, Rick developed a soft spot for mentoring the youth, passing along behind the scenes knowledge of his entrepreneurial spirit and success.

He is preceded in death by his son, Ryan Hoitt (baby); wife, Kathy (Bradbury) Hoitt; father, Robert Hoitt; and mother, Grace (Palin) Hoitt. He is survived by his daughters, Nickole Hoitt-Hunziker, Victoria Hoitt, Stephannie (Koester) Williams and Kari (Koester) Schader; his sisters and nephew, Julia, Analee, and Kenny Hoitt; and 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Rick had a larger than life personality. He was very kind, generous, charismatic and had a signature sense of humor that he shared with all. His style was iconic with his custom Alaskan gold nugget jewelry, Hawaiian button up shirts, corduroy jeans and aviator glasses. He was stubborn, always had to be right, but had a gentle hand when it came to his family and pulling splinters out of feet at the lake.

There will be no service held per his wishes and instead we will celebrate his grand life every day moving forward. He will be missed immensely and was loved unconditionally by all. In lieu of flowers, please share a favorite memory of Rick or how he impacted your life.

Like others, I never knew Rick personally, but certainly knew the family business.
I was at the store on Airport Rd. one day in 1977 when I heard this cool record spinning on the turntable. It was Genesis' "In the Beginning", which I liked because it reminded me of my favorite band, The Moody Blues. I went out the door with the cassette.
I'll try to enclose a photo ad, one of many from The Alaska Pipeline Workers' Handbook, which was handed out to everyone who attended orientation. Can't believe I still have the handbook. Blessings to the family.

I liked Rick a lot. He helped me enjoy my records more, with his helpful advice and by stocking way better inventory than you would expect in our small town. I used to go hang out in the store at lunch time just to waste his time and mine chatting. By Rick. I miss you.

Met Rick the summer before our freshman year at Lathrop HS, enjoyed running with the 8th Ave gang; Jay, Denali and on the girl's side the Giinthers, Jackie S and Jackie C. What a fun bunch! I never laughed so much, all of them, characters, Rick maybe the funniest. Running around with Rick led me to Hoitt's Music, where we hung out a lot. Grace (wonderful lady) gave me a charge account at 15, so I cashed whatever pay checks I had for the next 10 years, there. 1/2 for me,1/2 for Hoitt's. It's why i ended up with a 5,000+ LP collection. Great times there hanging with Rick, Grace, Judy, Noni, Monica and Mr. Burns. A big part of my youth, and fun loving Rick was at the center of a lot of it. Wouldn.t trade it for the world. Thanks, Rick. Good times.

Rick and I first met in 1980 when I went to work for Grace. Over the years we became friends and business partners in Hoitts Installation Center, the Limo business, and spent much time together. In fact, many people thought my name was Steve Hoitt and that we were brothers. You were a big part of my life and I´ll miss you.

I didn't know Rick personally, but I grew up in Fairbanks, Hoitt's was THE PLACE for music. I vaguely remember when Hoitt's was downtown, sifting through the record racks. I remember well on Airport Way making my way to the basement to a treasure trove of the greatest music there was. I'm sure I spent a time or two in the "Boom Boom" room checking out the latest in stereo equipment.

My family was in both the Horseless Carriage Club (later the Vern Nash Car Club) and the Farthest North Truck and Van club, so, I'm sure we spent some time parked out front, or in a car show at Hoitt's.

His name brings up good memories for me. I am sorry for the loss of Rick.

I remember going to Van horn rd to watch the locals drag race. That was during the 68-69-70s. It was out of the city limits and you´d see some really nice rides. Tick Tok and 26th street market sold liquor out of a drive up window. They had the Tik-Tokdancers and delicious Tik-Tok burger baskets. My uncle had one of the first 68 road runners. Everyone got their stereos from Hoitts music.. Those were good times to be young. I was influenced by that generation. Have a safe journey Rick. Thank you for the Music-Keep on Rocking.
