Richard Irvin Horst, Sr., 77, of Martinsburg, WV, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2025, surrounded by love and peace. He was born on April 25, 1947, in Waynesboro, PA, to the late Irvin and Madalyn (Miles) Horst. Richard was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A 1965 graduate of South Hagerstown High School, Richard went on to attend West Virginia University before enlisting in the United States Navy. During his service, he served as an Aviation Electronics Technician aboard the USS John F. Kennedy and the USS Saratoga where he did several cruises to the Mediterranean Sea and was able to visit many European countries. Richard was proud of his military service and the opportunity to serve his country. His commitment and honor remained central to his life.
In July of 1968, Richard married Dixie Meadors in Memphis, TN. Together, they had two children, Richie Jr. and Pamela. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Richard embarked on a successful career with the Bell Company. His work as an engineer in Memphis, TN, as well as in various locations in West Virginia and Maryland, led to his retirement from Verizon in 2008.
In June of 1980, Richard married Kimberly VanGilder in Keyser, WV, and they became the parents of four children: Ryan, Lindsay, Whitney, and Uriah. Later settling in Martinsburg, where they have lived since His family was always at the center of his life, and he was a loving and dedicated father, grandfather and great grandfather.
In retirement, Richard married Diana Coe in 2008, and they shared several happy years together prior to her passing.
Richard was well-known for his beautiful vocal abilities, a gift that he passed on to several of his children. He was an active member of the Navy choir during boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Training Center and continued to sing in many churches throughout his life. His love for music was a central part of who he was, and his voice brought joy to those around him.
Known for his intelligence, quick wit, and strong work ethic, Richard's kindness and generosity were felt by all who crossed his path. He was always quick to offer help to those less fortunate, and his sense of humor was a source of comfort and laughter to his family and friends. Richard's legacy will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Pamela Denise Horst, and wives Dixie and Diana, as well as his brother, Dr. Ronald Horst. He is survived by his children: Rich (Amanda) Horst, Ryan (Ashley) Horst, Lindsay (Bryon) DeGraw, Whitney (Evan) DeGraw, and Uriah (Amanda) Horst; 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; his former spouse and mother of 4 of his children, Kimberly Horst; his sister Joann; brothers Rodney, Roger, Randy, and Robert; and many extended family members and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
A celebration of Richard's life will be held at a later date.
