Delbert and Vicki Blackketter
March 10, 2021
Vicki and I met Rick through conversations at Chapman's Coffee. He was always interesting as a conversation partner, as he would share what was going on in his life, and where he had been, or would be going. His passing was really unexpected, as he seemed to be the picture of health, especially for someone 72 years old. Our first conversation was about country music, and concerts he had attended at Wolf Trap, or in other venues. That progressed to cover Chillicothe, and current events.
We will miss Rick. Vicki and I enjoyed talking with him on so many topics.

Richard Hydell had so many very wonderful qualities. He was brilliant, had near-encyclopedic knowledge of many subjects, and enjoyed a deep, wandering talk about almost anything. He always brought depth of analysis, or sly wit, or just silliness and fun to all kinds of conversations. He was most devoted to teaching and his students, but also to his cats, fruit pie, boat shoes, going to the library, photocopying, and the Tarheels and anything Chapel Hill. Sometimes, as he said, he "just liked to sit and seriously think" and he did that better than almost anyone. He made excellent baked ziti and anything you could grill on a Weber kettle. He came from a wonderful family; his parents were supportive, treasured him and were enormously proud of him. He had a large circle of warm and loving uncles, aunts and cousins who made get togethers great fun. He had a treasured gift of listening to and remembering important family stories. He made friends easily and had many friends and family members to whom he meant so very much. Rick and I were married for many years and then divorced, but I have always missed him, and now always will. Go with love, and rest in peace.

Rick was my colleague and a good friend for many years in the EAB Department at Muskingum University. I could always count on Rick for advice and his expertise and I can't even begin to count the number of conversations we had on how we could fix all the problems of the world. It's hard to believe that he has passed from our lives so suddenly. I will miss him.

He was the best confidante and friend you could ask for. He had a story for everything and saw the best in everyone. I miss him so much!
