Richard Jackson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by River Glenn Cremations & Funeral Services on Jan. 23, 2026.
Richard Doyle Jackson, age 81, passed away on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at Valley Springs Rehabilitation & Health in Van Buren, Arkansas. He was born on October 13, 1944, in Caruthersville, Missouri, to Annie Bell Sanders and John Green "J.G." Jackson.

Richard graduated from Caruthersville High School and later dedicated his life to service and hard work. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967, stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he worked with the Greenville Fire Department and later became the owner of Delta Glass Company, both in Greenville, Mississippi. In 1979, Richard was instrumental in the hiring of the first Black female firefighter in Mississippi-an accomplishment that reflected his strong sense of fairness, courage, and servant leadership. Richard retired from the City of Greenville in 1988 as Captain of the Fire Department.

On April 4, 1970, Richard married the love of his life, Linda Ann Cross, at the home of his parents in Darlove, Mississippi. Together, they built a life rooted in love, family, and faith. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, known for his servant's heart and his unwavering desire to care for those around him. Richard especially enjoyed fishing with his wife and cooking meals for family and friends, finding joy in bringing people together.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Ann Jackson of Van Buren, Arkansas; his children, Melinda (Daniel) Chisolm of Van Buren, Arkansas, and Phillip (Kim) Jackson of Corinth, Mississippi; and his five cherished grandchildren, Taylor Gaydos of New Palestine, Indianapolis; Dillon Kinsey of Topeka, Kansas; Ryan Chisolm of Barling, Arkansas; Sky Jackson of Corinth, Mississippi; and Emily Chisolm of Long Beach, Mississippi. Richard will be remembered for his kindness, integrity, and the lasting impact he made on his family and community.

He is preceded in death by his parents, J.G. and Annie Jackson; his sisters, Joyce Watkins and Wanda Crawford; and his brother, Raymond Jackson.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the River Glenn Chapel, located at 1805 North A Street in Fort Smith, AR 72901. A graveside service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at the Fort Smith National Cemetery, located at 522 Garland Ave. in Fort Smith, AR 72901.
