Richard Eugene "SugarBear" Kohlmeier, aged 82, passed away on April 24, 2025, in Seattle, Washington, where he was also born. He leaves behind a legacy of profound kindness and community involvement, marked significantly by his over 50 years of active participation in the AA community. SugarBear was renowned for his gentle demeanor, and voice, often seen blowing bubbles to delight children and using his comforting presence to support others during their most vulnerable times. His actions, rooted in generosity and encouragement, touched many lives, often being credited with life-changing impacts.
SugarBear was the proud owner and operator of Big Bear Auto Salvage since the early '70s, a venture that paralleled his long-standing commitment to community service. His entrepreneurial spirit also saw him active in local swap meets off Pacific Highway during the late '90s and early 2000s, where he sold tires. Sundays would find him at his "office" at the Emerald Downs Horse track in Auburn, indicating his diverse interests and community connections. Additionally, his spiritual commitments were evident in his regular visits to the Olalla Recovery Centers, where he engaged in prayer and smudging rituals with patients, further highlighting his dedication to healing and support.
SugarBear's educational journey was marked by his graduation from Evergreen High School in 1962, followed by a period of employment with Fentron Industries.
A celebration of his life is scheduled for June 6, 2025, at the Sla Hal Shed, located at 38901 172nd Ave SE, Auburn, WA 98092. Further details about the service hours will be announced later. Those wishing to learn more about the services or to share memories of SugarBear are encouraged to contact Robin at [email protected].
SugarBear will be remembered as a beacon of light in his community, touching the lives of many with his compassionate spirit and unwavering support. His legacy of kindness and dedication to helping others will undoubtedly continue to inspire all who knew him.

I will always hold my relationship with 'Bear' near and dear to my heart. We shared several common interests, but his calmness and humility is what made the biggest impact on me. He was like no other. Rest in peace, Brother. You will most certainly be missed.
