It is with saddened but rejoicing hearts filled with precious memories that we share the passing of Richard James Lyons from this earth into the Kingdom of Heaven on February 7th, 2025. While our hearts are heavy with our earthly loss, we cannot help but rejoice that he is now in a place where God Himself will wipe away every tear from his eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain! (Rev. 21:4)
Richard was born to Viola & James Lyons in East Orange, New Jersey. He grew up in Harrison with his four siblings – Joanie, Doris, Bobby, & Joey. He attended Washington Grammar School & Harrison High. Richard was quite a storyteller, and he entertained his children and grandchildren often with embellished stories of his childhood. Rich served in the army division of the military during the time of the Korean War. He went to school for, and had a lifelong career in, the sales of Logistics. Richard was actively involved in First Baptist Church of Red Bank, and other ministries, for over 60 years. Highlights of his ministry work included being a Sunday School teacher, serving as an usher, tutoring for Aslan Youth Ministries, being on the Board of Christian Education, serving as a Deacon, singing in the choir, and being actively involved with the Men's Ministry. Richard was an Ocean Grove usher during the summers where he greeted & welcomed thousands of guests into the Great Auditorium.
Richard was known for his servant's heart, and was happiest when he could encourage and pray with others. He truly believed in the power of prayer! He loved to sing and especially enjoyed praising the Lord through worship songs. He was a mentor to many and was an inspiration in the ways he lived out his faith in the Word of God. He wanted all those he encountered to know that God so loved them that He gave his one and only Son (Jesus), that whoever believes in Him and accepts Him as Lord, shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).
Richard was predeceased by parents, Viola & James, and his brother Bobby. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 63 years. He adored his wife and took great pleasure in traveling with her in their later years. They were long time members of Little Monmouth Beach Club, where Richard loved to go swimming. Richard and Ruth also loved birdwatching together in their backyard from the picturesque windows of their home. Additionally, Richard is survived by his daughters - Joanne Holcombe and Joyce Kalorin; his sons-in-law - Roy Holcombe and Dominic Kalorin; his 3 beloved grandchildren - Mary, Nicole, & Dylan, with whom he cherished spending time; his siblings - Joanie (Rick), Doris and Joey; his sister-in-law Lois; and by many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
Please join us for a Celebration of Richard's Life on Thursday, February 20th at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church, 84 Maple Ave, Red Bank, N.J. 07701. Visitation to follow at the church in Fellowship Hall. The family will accept flowers or donations. Donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, Attention: Youth & Children's Ministries, 84 Maple Ave, Red Bank, N.J. 07701. Arrangements are under the direction of Thompson Memorial Home of Red Bank, N.J.

I only found out about Dick's passing today, the day of his Memorial Service. I wish I had known....Jenny and I would have been there. To Ruth: We love you and Dick so much, and I'm sorry we weren't there for the both of you. You are forever in our hearts, minds and prayers! May God bless you, grant you His peace and give you an extra sense of His presence in your life.

Dick Lyons, you truly had a servant´s heart and were deeply loved-not only by your family but also by your church family.

Two of our favorite memories of Dick is how his face would still light up whenever he talked about meeting his wife Ruth. And during Sunday worship music, his hands were always lifted in love and praise to the Lord.

Lifting you all up in our love and prayers.

With heartfelt sympathy,
Michael and Mary Travostino
