Richard Mason Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes – MacDonald Chapel - Howell on Dec. 8, 2024.
Richard "Rick" Donald Mason, known affectionately as "Papa Rick" by those he held closest, left us on December 7, 2024, at the age of 77. Born on July 15, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, Rick knew from an early age the values of hard work, resilience, and humor-qualities that he carried with him all his life. Richard peacefully left this world in Howell, MI, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished for generations.
After graduating from Highland Park High School in 1964, Richard served as a soldier in the Vietnam War. Upon returning, he began a career in the construction industry. Later on, he dedicated 18 years to managing mens sobriety homes in Livingston County, offering a safe haven for those seeking a fresh start and a better life. He ran a tight ship helping hundreds of men rebuild their lives, and many are grateful for their sobriety to this day.
Rick's greatest achievements were his children and grandchildren. Jennifer Sharp (Louie Sharp), Michael Mason (Michelle Mason), Jeff Mason, and the late Eric Mason knew him as "dad", but to his six grandchildren, he was known as the one and only "Papa Rick". Grandchildren, Cecilia Sharp and The Richards, Madilyn, Mikey, Meadow, Myla, and Menorah, were adored beyond measure, and will remember the love Papa Rick showered them with. For 16 years, he and his partner, Sandy, shared in the joys of life together.
Rick's sense of humor was legendary, a unique blend of wit that could brighten the darkest of days. He was a friend to many, a counselor to some, and a guide for all. Those lucky enough to know him were inspired by his ability to keep people on the straight and narrow while never losing his lighthearted charm.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Rick's life on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at 3 pm at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes - MacDonald Chapel in Howell, Michigan followed by a celebration at 5 pm at Chemung Hills Golf Club & Banquet Center. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Livingston County Alano Club
