Richard Allen Masteller was born in Sac City, Iowa, on December 8, 1940, to C.F. "Punk" and Jessie Woodrow (Harmon) Masteller, Richard was the oldest of seven siblings. After a youth spent in Vivian, where he graduated from Vivian High School in 1959, he honorably served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War from 1963 to 1965, stationed in Germany. As a sharpshooter, he earned the M-14 Rifle Good Conduct Medal and later imparted his shooting expertise to youngsters as a 4H leader.
Upon returning home, he dedicated his life to the land, working as a farmer and rancher and enjoying the simplicity of horseback riding and the great outdoors. The open fields and the rhythm of nature were his sanctuary. Richard's heart found its match when he married Anna May Hoeppner on June 20, 1969. Together, they welcomed two sons, Mark Allan and Jason Andrew, into the world. The family established their roots in Fort Pierre, where Richard shifted his career to Oahe Plumbing and Heating before eventually retiring as a sheet metalist from Leidholt, McNeely & Leidholt in 2003.
An avid outdoorsman, Richard's love for hunting, fishing, and creative craftsmanship in making bottom bouncer fishing gear were paralleled only by his love for his family. Camping and spending time with his family outdoors was a favorite pastime. His service to the community was evident through his roles with the Pierre Fire Department and as captain of the Pierre Airport Fire Deparment. Richard, who enjoyed traveling, counted the Alaskan cruise and Branson trips among his cherished experiences. If he wasn't enjoying an outdoor activity you would most likely find him working on his coin and stamp collections, playing cards with family and friends or reading a good western.
Left to honor his legacy is his wife of 56 years, Anna May, his sons, Mark (Teresa) Masteller and Jason (Robin) Masteller, and his pride and joy – his grandchildren, Marli (Jeremy), Morgan (Madison), Ashton, Gracie, Remington, Lainie, Khodie and Ahelie, along with three great-grandchildren, Bodhi, Wren, and Porter. He also leaves behind sisters Janet Boyle and Peggy (Pat) Dougherty, brothers Duane (Beth) Masteller and Tim (Ronna) Masteller, and many more family members and friends who will hold Richard's memory dear. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Penny Booth, brother Merlin, and brother-in-law Bob Boyle.
