Billy Lee Masteller, 91, of Mishawaka, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 5, 2025, at Kokomo Place in Kokomo, surrounded by his loving family.
Born June 12, 1934, in Rochester, Indiana, Bill was the son of the late Robert and Emma Louise (Wilson) Masteller. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Ruth D. Masteller, who passed away on November 1, 2017.
A 1952 graduate of Kewanna High School, Bill went on to earn his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1957. Throughout his career, he pursued graduate studies at Arizona State University, Michigan State University, and the University of Notre Dame. A lifelong learner and respected engineer, Bill was a proud member of Tau Beta Pi, the National Engineering Honor Society, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
On December 26, 1954, Bill married Ruth Benjamin at the Kewanna Church of Christ. He faithfully served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1954 to 1964.
Bill had a distinguished 39-year career with the Bendix Corporation in Mishawaka, where he worked as an electrical engineer on missile guidance systems, including the TALOS project. His innovations earned him a U.S. patent-a testament to his technical excellence and dedication to his field.
A man of many passions, Bill was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mishawaka. He belonged to the Talos Flyers and actively participated in square, round, and ballroom dancing clubs. A committed volunteer, he gave his time to the Boy Scouts of America and the Res in Mishawaka. He also found great joy in gardening, woodworking, camping, canoeing across the U.S. and Canada with his family, and traveling the world with Ruth, always behind the lens capturing memories through photography.
Bill is survived by his loving children: Susan (John) Robertson, Ronald (Susan) Masteller, and Steven Masteller; his cherished grandchildren: Lisa (Dan) McGowan, Andrew Robertson, Matthew Robertson, Wayne (Oksana) Masteller, Gregory (Amy) Masteller, Laura Masteller, and Teresa (Alex Henderson) Masteller; and great-grandson Dean Masteller.
He is also survived by his siblings: J Masteller, Jonathan Masteller, Dara Yoder, Mary Nell (Marion) Hopkins, Barbara Wireman, Martha Burns, Emma Masteller, and Sally Masteller, along with numerous friends, colleagues, and extended family who will remember him with admiration and love.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola, IN 46561. A funeral service in Bill's honor will follow at 1:00 PM. Interment will take place immediately after at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, IN.
The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff of Kokomo Place and Heartland Hospice for the exceptional love, care, and compassion shown during our time of need.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Bill leaves behind a legacy of love, integrity, and accomplishment. He will be deeply missed.
