Richard Francis McCauley age 70 of Shullsburg, WI passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2024 from complications of esophageal cancer. Richard was born on August 29, 1953, the son of Joseph LeRoy and Rita Ann (Felder) McCauley.
Richard graduated from Shullsburg High School in 1971 and spent most of his working life as a small engine mechanic repairing lawn mowers, chain saws, and similar equipment. He was known as someone who could fix almost anything mechanical. In later years he semi-retired and worked part time for Craig's True Value Hardware in Darlington, WI and cared for his aging parents until their passing. He also served as Treasurer for the Town of Shullsburg for several years.
Richard was a lifelong member of St. Matthews parish in Shullsburg and until his illness, spent many years as a lector and assisting with various duties around the parish.
In his free time Richard enjoyed listening to Chicago Cubs baseball and watching old Western TV shows. He particularly liked helping his parents prepare for their annual neighborhood 4th of July party which seemed to grow in size every year. In his younger years he also enjoyed accompanying his parents to their yearly Tri-State Tours bus trips. Together they visited many National Parks and tourist destinations throughout the United States and Canada. In recent years, he enjoyed transporting his Amish neighbors to their various appointments in the area.
He is survived by his brother Steven (Bernie) McCauley, a niece Kathleen Troxel and her three children, Alayna, Sadie, and Graham, an aunt Theresa (Herbert) Troester and numerous cousins. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, various aunts, uncles, and several cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, June 3, 2024, at 12:00 P.M. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church (344 N. Judgement, Shullsburg). Burial will be in St. Matthew's Cemetery. Family and friends may call at St. Matthew's Catholic Church from 10:00 A.M. until 11:45 A.M. with a rosary being prayed at 9:30 A.M. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church.
