Richard Means Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 19, 2025.
Richard Lawrence Means was born on December 25, 1945. Richard was the only child of Hazel Lawrence and Edward Eaves Means of Malvern, Arkansas. He died on February 14, 2024 in Arlington, Texas. He is survived by Emilia Gay Griffith Means and his son Richard Nathaniel Griffith Means. He earned his Bachelor's degree in history from Henderson State Teacher's College in Arkadelphia in 1966 and his Master's degree in history from the University of Arkansas in 1968. From 1968 to 1969 he taught at the University of Southwestern Louisiana and served as Assistant to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts from 1969 to 1970. It was in Lafayette where he married Emilia Gay Griffith at the Church of the Ascension. In 1970 he was hired to chair the social science division at the newly opened Mountain View College of the Dallas County Community College District. Much preferring to teach over administration, he stopped chairing his department in 1972 and continued on as Professor of History at Mountain View until he retired in 2023. Over the summer of 1974 he participated in a National Endowment for the Humanities Seminar at the University of California at Davis. In Dallas he was a member of Corinthian Sailing Club, served as director of the junior sailing program, and served as fleet captain of the Lido 14 fleet and the Lightning fleet along with Gay. He had also been a member of Rush Creek Yacht Club on Lake Ray Hubbard where he sailed a J-24. He is listed in the Marquis Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in America.
