Richard Lonnell Mincy, a beloved father, brother, uncle, cousin and brother-in-law passed away on May 15, 2024. Known affectionately as "Bird" to his family and friends, Richard was born on December 3, 1962, in
Washington, D.C. the city he called home throughout his life.
He was born to the late parents Barbara Jean and Larry Cleo Mincy.
Richard was raised by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary E. Smith and his Aunts and Uncles. He was a life-long DC resident that was reared and educated in the DC Public School system where he obtained his High School Diploma as a graduate of Paul L. Dunbar in 1982.
As a child Tweety was a member of the St. Anne Penecostal Holiness Church which he was a Junior Deacon and he also sang on the choirs.
He was full of laughter and jokes which he sometimes laughed at his own "corny" jokes before anyone else had a chance to do so.
He loved to eat and some of his favorite foods were Honey Buns, Cakes, Baked Mac n' Cheese and he loved his Pepsi's and Sweet Tea.
Before Thanksgiving, he would always call his brother, JR to let him know that he would be coming to dinner, stating that "I know my Sister-in-Law is cooking". (LOL)
He would show up and show out making sure everyone had a good time and was entertained with his jolly character.
As an accomplished electrician and home improvement specialist, Richard brought light, both literally and figuratively, into the lives of those he served. He had an innate ability to transform spaces and touch lives in profound ways. His work was his art, and he found joy in improving the homes and lives of those in his community. He was known for his tenacity, resilience and unstoppable spirit in every aspect of his life.
Richard leaves behind a legacy of love and strength and he also leaves to mourn and cherish his memories his son, Gary Richardson, a very devoted friend, Chantay Franklin, his brothers, Willie Laysaunders Wright and Larry Floyd Mincy (Althia) sister, Charleszette Brandon, Aunts, Dianne Miller, Jeanette, Annette and Cynthia Smith and one Uncle Winston Smith, Nieces, Nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Barbara Jean Mincy, Mary E. Smith (grandmother)Timothy Blunt (brother), Bertina T. Mincy (sister).
As we remember Richard, we are reminded of the words of Maya Angelou, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel".
Richard's memory will be carried in the hearts of all those he touched with his kindness, warmth, and unforgettable charm.
His magnetic personality and unique spirit left an indelible mark on everyone he met; he was truly a man who lived life to the fullest and on his own terms.
A LETTER TO MY BROTHER
They say there is a reason
They say time will heal
But, neither time or a reason will change the way I feel.
Gone are the days we use to share
but, in my heart you will always be there.
The gates of memories will never close; I miss you more than anybody knows.
REST IN PEACE, MY BROTHER 'til we meet again.
