Richard Nelson, 72
Richard was born in Malden, MA the second of four sons born to Norma and the late James Nelson. The young family moved to North Reading, MA where a young Richard discovered his love of nature and adventure, He could often be found fishing on the local lake or riding his bike deep into the woods. As a teen he took a job at the local sawmill and found he loved working with wood.
As a young man he moved to Colorado Springs, CO where he loved exploring the canyons and mountains looking for Indian arrowheads and crystals. He joined Wigans, a premier wood shop in Colorado where he perfected his woodworking skills. He opened his own woodshop, W.W. Woodrights, a casino interior and architectural millwork company.
His adventurous nature and love of travel eventually led him to the Caribbean island of Jamaica where he lived for several years before landing in NYC and Staten Island where he met his wife Debra. After settling on Staten Island, Richard purchased an old bank building and built a woodshop where he enjoyed creating custom pieces and charcuterie boards.
His love of adventure was nothing compared to his love for his family. His children Tobey, Ben, Curtis, Wednesday, bonus son Bobby, son in law Matt and daughter in law Tina. He adored his grandchildren Oliver, Miles, Clark and Phoebe whom he would have spent every minute of every day if possible. He doted on his two cavapoos Beau and Arrow who he spoiled on a daily basis with belly rubs and treats.
Richard is also survived by his mother, Norma Mae and his brothers Paul, Kenny and David. He was a beloved uncle to many nephews and nieces and a loving brother in law to Debra's family.
Richard will be waked Saturday, October 25, 2025 from 2pm to 6pm.
