Richard Henry Nickel Sr., 86, passed away Friday morning, May 16, 2025. He was born at home in Morrison on December 1, 1938 to Alwin and Alma (Kriehn) Nickel.
Richard attended Morrison Zion Lutheran Elementary School and De Pere High School. He proudly enlisted in the Army Reserves in 1956 and was discharged in 1966. He always enjoyed sharing stories of driving tanks, barns that got in the way and his mess hall cooking skills.
He began his construction ironwork apprenticeship program in 1960 with Local Union #8. He took pride in all of the buildings and highway projects he working on in the Green Bay, Fox Valley and Milwaukee areas. He had many stories from the job sites, especially the nuclear power plants projects he oversaw. Richard retired in 2000.
Richard married Eleanor Bendlin on May 26th, 1962 in Milwaukee, WI. They were sadly only a few days short of celebrating their 64th wedding anniversary. They had two children: Richard (Rick) Nickel Jr. married to Mary and Amy Spaude married to Scott. They were blessed with 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He always lit up when he was sharing time with them especially at the cottage in the UP when he taught them to fish and drive the pontoon boat-"Wheeeeeeeeeee".
He had a passion for farming that led them to own and operate a beef farm, Nickel's Cattle Ranch in Morrison from 1972-1983.
Richard also loved spending time playing cards or cribbage along with talking smart while doing it. "The cards count themselves." He always enjoyed fishing and cheering on the Green Bay Packers when he had the chance.
He led a life firm in his convictions and faith. He was a man of integrity. He led by quiet example and taught that to his family. He may have been a mountain of a man but had a warm gentle teddy bear soul.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Alwin and Alma; siblings, Robert, Lois, Dorothy, Ruth (Herbert); nephew, David Timm; and other members of his extended family. He is survived by one sister, Helen Nickel.
Family and friends may visit at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 2160 Packerland Dr, Green Bay, beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2025. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Fort Howard Memorial Cemetery.
