Richard J. Perkins of Waltham passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at the age of 81. He was born on May 29, 1941, to parents Gardner and Marie Perkins of Beverly, Mass.
He served in the US Army from 1956-1958 and worked as a pressman at the Boston Globe for over 30 years, retiring in 1997. Richard loved photography and was a free lance videographer for a Boston-based news station, covering on-location news across Greater Boston. His passion for photography was passed down to his daughter Diane who also became a freelance photographer. After retiring from the Boston Globe, Richard returned to the workforce part time working as a real estate agent alongside his wife Marie.
Richard had a passion for vintage cars, boats and war movies. He loved the History channel and Bobby Vinton music.
He loved the outdoors and taking drives to Rockport. He enjoyed boating with close friends in Ipswich and grabbing a famous roast beef sandwich at Kelly's Roast Beef. His most cherished time was spent with beloved wife Marie of 54 years, his family, friends and his cherished cats.
In early 2018, Richard was diagnosed with ALS, a cruel and debilitating disease. In spite of the challenges he faced, Richard remained happy, upbeat, funny and positive. His whit and jokes were off beat and his "sayings" adored. He loved many and was loved in return by many more.
Richard is survived by his wife, Marie (Pastore) Perkins; son David Perkins; daughter Diane Perkins, and his late son Richard Perkins Jr. He was predeceased by his parents, Gardner and Marie Perkins, and his brother Ronald Perkins.
In lieu of flowers, we kindly request that a donation be made in Richard's memory to the ALS Association at 200 Friberg Parkway, Suite 1000, Westborough, MA 01581. Donation can also be made online at https: www.als.org/Massachusetts.
Relatives and Friends will gather on Saturday commencing at 11 a.m. with a Funeral Home Service to be conducted at 1 p.m.. Interment will take place in family lot at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Belmont Street, Watertown.
